The IWGP World Heavyweight Championship was the top singles title in New Japan Pro Wrestling. It was created in January 2021 when the IWGP Heavyweight & Intercontinental Championships, which for the prior year were defended together because the same person held both titles simultaneously, were unified to create a new championship. The decision, as well as the design of the new title belt, received overwhelmingly negative reactions from both fans and wrestlers. The title was first awarded to Kota Ibushi in March 2021 as the final prior double champion.
The title was retired on January 6, 2026 when then-champion Yota Tsuji requested to split up the titles, reactivate the IWGP Heavyweight Championship and retire the IWGP Intercontinental Championship. Prior World Heavyweight Champions will be recognized as subsequent IWGP Heavyweight Champions.
