IWGP Heavyweight Championship

The IWGP Heavyweight Championship was formerly the top singles title in New Japan Pro Wrestling. It was first awarded in June 1987 when Antonio Inoki won a tournament final to crown the inaugural champion. The title was unified with the IWGP Intercontinental Championship in early 2021 and became the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship. In 2020 it was defended simultaneously with the Intercontinental Championship as the same wrestler held both titles and it remained that way until the titles were unified.
