Notes: Onosato has been promoted to Ozeki for September. Kirishima will stay at Sekiwake and will have another chance at Ozeki re-promotion in November, but he will need to either win the championship or finish with at least 13 wins. Takakeisho retired after Day 13 and has become Minatogawa oyakata, likely serving as an assistant coach in Tokiwayama stable and perhaps beginning the path to becoming a stablemaster someday. Abi will also be demoted from Sanyaku along with Hiradoumi. Daieisho may return to Sekiwake while Wakamotoharu has a chance at a Sanyaku return again. Oho will probably make his Sanyaku debut, while Shodai and maybe Wakatakakage will be back. Churanoumi, Oshouma and Nishikigi are in line for big moves up, as is Takayasu despite losing his last 3 and renewed injury concerns over the last 3 days. Kagayaki, SHirokuma & Kitanowaka should all be demoted to Juryo along with possibilities of BUshozan and Kinbozan going fown too. Despite demotion Onokatsu should be safe at M14.

Juryo:
Juryo 1-Chiyoshoma (10-5), Onosho (1-4-10)
Juryo 2-Tokihayate (9-6), Shishi (9-6)
Juryo 3-Tamashoho (6-9), Asanoyama (Absent)
Juryo 4-Shimanoumi (6-9), Shimazuumi (6-5-4)
Juryo 5-Daiamami (4-11), Hakuoho (8-7)
Juryo 6-Hidenoumi (6-9), Shiden (7-8)
Juryo 7-Tsurugisho (6-8-1), Mitoryu (6-7-2)
Juryo 8-Asakoryu (11-4), Hakuyozan (7-8)
Juryo 9-Daishoho (6-9), Myogiryu (Absent)
Juryo 10-Tohakuryu (8-7), Fujiseiun (7-8)
Juryo 11-Tomokaze (9-6), Takerufuji (13-2, Champion)
Juryo 12-Daiseizan (7-8), Kiryuko (4-11)
Juryo 13-Aoiyama (5-10), Chiyosakae (0-4-11)
Juryo 14-Kayo (11-4), Oshoumi (6-9)
Notes: The big question is whether Takerufuji will return to the top tier in September again, I’m thinking he will. He was last up in March, winning the Emperor’s Cup in his rookie campaign and becoming the first in 110 years to manage that feat, but was injured on Day 14 and missed May and most of July, sending him back to Juryo. Chiyoshoma will return to the top tier while Tokihayate has a chance to return along with Shishi maybe going up for the first time. Asakoryu should move up to J1 or J2 for the first time. At the bottom, Myogiryu & Aoiyama retired rather than be demoted, both are now oyakatas. Kiryuko, Chiyosakae & Oshoumi are all doing down, Kayo will make a big move up, Daiseizan should be safe. The other big question mark is Asanoyama-it was felt he would be demoted to Makushita due to being absent due to injury and not expected back until January, but now there are rumors he may stay in Juryo one more tournament.

The Shin-Juryo rikishi in November, reaching the second tier for the first time, will be Wakaikari, Aonishiki and Kototebakari, who also will be a Kaimeirikishi as his promotion also brings a new shikona (ring name change)-he will now be Kotoeiho. The Sai-Juryo rikishi, returning to the second tier after being demoted, will be Tochitaikai, Chiyomaru & Nabatame. One surprise to me is that Makushita Champion Hatsuyama didn’t make it to Juryo despite going 7-0 from Ms16.

In the lower tiers, Enho will continue his efforts to return to Juryo and higher as he went 6-1 in Jonidan, which will see him promoted to the Sandanme in November. Right now the earliest he would have a chance to get back up to Juryo is May. Remember that if he gets back to Juryo for just one more tournament, he qualifies for elder stock. There were 8 lower-tier retirements after the tournament, most notably Kotoyusho who was Makushita 11 and got as high as J13. He will become Wakaimonogashira and remain with the Japan Sumo Association as a paid staff member (not an oyakata). Also retiring was Daiseiryu, who also reached Juryo in his career (as high as J12).

The November Banzuke will be officially announced on October 28.
