New Japan ran Day 9 of the New Japan Cup today, beginning the Quarterfinals.
Today’s event was held at Aichi Prefectural Gym in Nagoya and can be watched on demand on New Japan World.
The announced paid attendance was 1750.
There was a last-minute change to the event as it was announced David Finlay was off shortly before the start. Illness. He was to have faced Hirooki Goto in the Quarterfinals. Goto gets a free win as a result and will advance to the Semifinals.
Before the event began, a memorial ceremony for Yutaka Yoshie, who died last week after a match in All-Japan, was held.
Match 1: Shoma Kato, Boltin Oleg & Yoh beat Katsuya Murashima,. El Desperado & Togi Makabe. Oleg pinned Murashima after Kamikaze.
Match 2: Francesco Akira, Great-O-Khan & Jeff Cobb beat Ryusuke Taguchi, Tanga Loa & Tomihiro Ishii. Cobb pinned Taguchi after Tour of the Islands.
Match 3: Mikey Nicholls & Zack Sabre Jr. beat Callum Newman & TJP. Sabre beat Newman with a cross leg lock.
Match 4: Taiji Ishimori, Gabriel Kidd, Chase Owens & KENTA beat Jado, El Phantasmo, HIkuleo & Totu Yano. Ishimori pinned Jado.
Match 5: Yuya Uemura & Taichi beat Shota Umino & YOSHI-HASHI. Uemura pinned YOSHI-HASHI with Storm Clutch.
Match 6: BUSHI, HIromu Takahashi, Yota Tsuji, Shingo Takagi & Tetsuya Naito beat Dick Togo, Yoshinobu Kanemaru, Yujiro Takahashi, Ren Narita & EVIL. Tsuji pinned Takahashi after Gene Blaster.
Main Event: New Japan Cup Quarterfinals: SANADA beat Jack Perry.
New Japan Cup Quarterfinals: Hirooki Goto beat David Finlay by forfeit.
As a result, the first Semifinals will be SANADA vs. Goto.
Day 10 is tomorrow at Twin Messe Shizuoka South Building in Shizuoka. Live streaming on New Japan World will begin TONIGHT at 11 PM PT/2 AM ET.
UPDATE: Finlay is now off tonight/tomorrow’s event. Not medically cleared. He was to have been in a 10-man tag match. Gedo is the replacement.
