WITHDRAWAL (Pre-Tournament): Terunofuji (Y). The usual, aka health-related complications from diabetes and, to a lesser extent, left knee injury. Will not compete this tournament. Reportedly he’s good with the Yokozuna Deliberation Council and won’t have any retirement pressures until January. Since being promoted to Yokozuna (19 tournaments) that gives him only 8 tournaments completed…but the incredibly odd stat line of 8 championships in those 8 tournaments completed and either sitting out or withdrawing before finishing the other 11.
Of note: If Tamawashi competes tomorrow, he will tie the “iron man” record for most consecutive career matches without missing a day and would break the record on Day 3. Also, this is the 4th straight tournament in which Hoshoryu has lost on opening day.

Shimazuumi (J4) beat Shimanoumi (J4)
Shishi (J2) beat Tamashoho (J3)
Onosho (J1) beat Tokihayate (J2)
WITHDRAWALS (Pre-Tournament): Asanoyama (J3), Myogiryu (J9). Asanoyama-knee as expected. Out the rest of the year. Will be demoted to Makushita after the tournament. Myogiryu-unknown. Status uncertain. Reportedly needs to get at least 5 wins to avoid demotion to Makushita. Career may be over if he can’t come back, reportedly he’s got elder stock and can cash it in to become an oyakata.

DDT ran an event in Nagoya today as part of a doubleheader with Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling.

Today’s event was held at Nagoya International Conference Center Event Hall in Nagoya and can be watched on demand on WRESTLE UNIVERSE.

It’s not clear if Akito cashed it in, but it’s led to a DDT Extreme Championship challenge. That match will be a Flourescent IPPON Tag Team Death Match betwqeen Katsumata & TBA and Akito & TBA and will happen on 9/29 at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo.

Match 5: Yukio Naya beat Ryuichi Kawakami.

Impromptu Match: Yuki Iino beat DDT Universal Champion MAO to win the title. Iino becomes the 13th DDT Universal Champion. Iino had a “Money In The Bank” title shot and used it here, ending MAO’s incredible reign in just 70 seconds. Very well timed cash in. Next up: Naya. That match will happen on 9/29.

Main Event: KO-D Openweight Champion Shinya Aoki beat Tetsuya Endo by ref stoppage (TKO/technical submission) to retain the title.V1 for Aoki.

The next event is a NO SPOILERS Beer Garden Pro Wrestling event Tuesday at Ueno Park Outdoor Stage in Tokyo. NO SPOILERS means any social media about match content or containing results are prohibited until midnight that day, so nothing until after 8 AM PT/11 AM ET. There will be no live broadcast.

Side note for 9/29: The event is a legit advance sellout, in small part because it will feature the return of Kaisei Takechi for his second career match, which means much more attention than normal for the promotion. The event will also be broadcast for free on ABEMA in Japan and will be available outside Japan on WRESTLE UNIVERSE.

UPDATE: For the Extreme Title match on 9/29, TBA will be Kazuma Sumi for Katsumata and Yuni for Akito. The winning team determines who wins the title-if Sumi is the winner, Katdumata retains the title. If Yuni is the winner, Akito wins the title. The stip is there is a fluorescent lighttube above the ring, whoever breaks it by taking a shot from it loses.

Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling 9/8/24 Results (Updated)

Tokyo Joshi Pro returns to Nagoya today for “Always Be A Challenger ’24”, with the focus on both Nagoya-based SKE48 and next week’s house show in Aizawakamatsu. That’s because SKE48’s Yuki Arai defends the International Princess Championship today against Arisu Endo, who wants nothing more than to go home as a double champion (she is half of the current Princess Tag Team Champions). Considering there’s only 2 weeks left until WRESTLE PRINCESS 5, one of the promotion’s biggest events of the year, there’s not much else build-wise to that event today. Also no SKE38 performance which is unusual for a Nagoya event, but Yoshiko Hasegawa makes her first appearance as a full-time participant in TJPW today as well.

Today’s event will be held at Nagoya International Conference Center Event Hall in Nagoya and can be watched LIVE on WRESTLE UNIVERSE. There will be no commentary. It’s a 7 match card and with only the main event possibly going longer than 20 minutes this event wouldn’t go much longer than 2 1/2 hours at most but probably will be just over 2 hours. Results may also be on slight delay because I will be simulcasting this event and a Stardom event today for most of the event.

Today’s; lineup:
Toga vs. Kira Summer
Raku vs. Mahiro Kiryu & HIMAWARI in a 3-way
Yuki Kamifuku & Pom Harajuku vs. Wakana Uehara & Chika Nanase
Rika Tatsumi & Yuki AIno vs. Kaya Toribami & Moka Miyamoto
Miyu Yamashita, Runa Okubo & Haru Kazashiro vs. Mizuki, Shino Suzuki & Uta Takami
Miu Watanabe & Suzume vs. Shoko Nakajima & Yoshiko Hasegawa
International Princess Champion Yuki ARai vs. Arisu Endo for the title

Updates below will begin at 8:30 PM PT/11:30 PM ET. The live stream is scheduled to begin at 8:15 PM PT/11:15 PM ET.

8:30 PM PT UPDATE: Live updates begin now.

We are LIVE from Nagoya International Conference Center Event Hall in Nagoya, Japan. There is no commentary.

The paid attendance will be announced after the event. Advance sales were good and while this venue can be configured for nearly 3000, today’s capacity will be much smaller. Probably going to be close to maybe 500. (UPDATE: The announced paid attendance was 507)

They wasted little time getting right to Up Up Girls.

The matches begin at 8:38 PM PT/11:38 PM ET.

Match 1: Toga vs. Kira Summer. 15 minute time limit
Result: Toga beat Kira Summer

Match 2: Raku vs. Mahiro Kiryu & HIMAWARI in a 3-way. 15 minute time limit
Result: Raku beat Mahiro Kiryu & HIMAWARI in a 3-way by pinning HIMAWARI.

Result: Yuki Kamifuku & Pom Harajuku beat Wakana Uehara & Chika Nanase. Kamifuku pinned Nanase after Fameasser.

Match 4: Rika Tatsumi & Yuki AIno vs. Kaya Toribami & Moka Miyamoto. 20 minute time limit
Result: Rika Tatsumi & Yuki AIno beat Kaya Toribami & Moka Miyamoto. Aino pinned Toribami after Venus DDT.

Match 5: Miyu Yamashita, Runa Okubo & Haru Kazashiro vs. Mizuki, Shino Suzuki & Uta Takami. 20 minute time limit
Result: Miyu Yamashita, Runa Okubo & Haru Kazashiro beat Mizuki, Shino Suzuki & Uta Takami. Yamashita pinned Suzuki after Attitude Adjustment.

Match 6: Miu Watanabe & Suzume vs. Shoko Nakajima & Yoshiko Hasegawa. 20 minute time limit
Result: Miu Watanabe & Suzume beat Shoko Nakajima & Yoshiko Hasegawa. Watanabe beat Hasegawa with a modified sharpshooter.

Main Event: International Princess Champion Yuki ARai vs. Arisu Endo for the title. 30 minute time limit
Result: International Princess Champion Yuki Arai beat Arisu Endo to retain the title. V4 for Arai. And I go home happy, although Endo will not. Next up: Moka Miyamoto. Maybe in 2 weeks at WRESTLE PRINCESS 5. Updates to follow.

The next event is Saturday at Aizuwakamatsu City Tsuruga Castle Gym in Fukushima for the next Arisu Endo hometown event. Streamers/paper tape throwing will be allowed only for Endo. Shoko Nakajima will not be at the event due to a US tour and Yuki Kamifuku will miss the event due to a China tour. There will be no live broadcast.

UPDATE: It’s now official. Arai-Miyamoto at WRESTLE PRINCESS 5. With zero pre-match build because Arai is not on next week’s event unless plans change, and that’s it before WRESTLE PRINCESS 5. Arai has a great title reign going but much to my dismay this could be the end.

Stardom 9/8/24 Results (Updated)

With the debacle that was this year’s 5STAR GP now behind them, Stardom moves on with their first September event today in Tokyo. The event starts with an award ceremony for tournament winner Maika, then it’s an 8-match card including a title match as Mei Seira defends the High Speed Championship against Gina. There also will be a 3-way between Hanan, Thekla & Hazuki with the winner getting the next Wonder Of Stardom Championship shot.

Today’s event will be held at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo and can be watched LIVE on Stardom World. It’s not yet known if there will be any commentary. Since any match probably won’t have more than a 20 minute time limit (High Speed Championship matches usually go 15 minutes at most) I anticipate this event having a total running time of around 2 1/2 hours. (Pre-show Update: You can also watch the first 2 matches FOR FREE on YouTube)

Today’s lineup (match order TBA):
5STAR GP Award Ceremony (before matches)

7:30 PM PT UPDATE: Live updates begin now.

We are LIVE from Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan. There is no commentary.

The paid attendance will be announced after the event. Looks like almost full capacity setup and not a sellout but mostly full from what I can see so far, so probably around 1000. (UPDATE: The announced paid attendance was 1022)

The event begins with introduction by the ring announcers ahead of the 5STAR GP Award Ceremony. These include special prizes for wrestlers and announcement of the best match in each block. After all the winners are announced, New Japan Pro Wrestling President Hiroshi Tanahashi is introduced as the presenter. Special prizes went to Hanan, AZM & Starlight Kid. Red Block A Best Match was Maika vs. Hazuki. Red Block B Best Match was Mayu Iwatani vs. Momo Watanabe. Blue Block A Best Match was Kid vs. Saori Anou (Anou is not present today). Blue Block B Best Match was Suzu Suzuki vs.Thekla. Thekla accepted in full heel mode by ending with “Thank You, F*ck You!” in English. Next up was the Runner-up prize for Saya Kamitani, whose heel taunt pose was mimiced by Tanahashi for photos. Finally, the tournament winner’s prize including a queen’s robe and crown for Maika, plus the trophy. Lastly were comments from Stardom President Taro Okada then the group photo, during which like earlier Momo Watanabe acted like she wanted nothing to do with all this.
UPDATE: Here were the specific special prizes:
Distinguished Service-Hanan
Courage-AZM
Skill-Starlight Kid
Runner-Up-Saya Kamitani

Today’s lineup order announcement follows. The High Speed Championship match will be the main event.

Result: Starlight Kid beat Rian by submission

Match 2: Aya Sakura & Sayaka Kurara vs. Rina & Ruaka. 15 minute time limit
Result: Aya Sakura & Sayaka Kurara beat Rina & Ruaka. Sakura pinned Rina. Afterwards, Sakura with microphone. Not surprisingly, she wants Rina again for the Future Of Stardom Championship. Or perhaps the New Blood Tag Team Champinoship held by Rina. Or both…

Match 3: Mina Shirakawa vs. Saya Iida & Ranna Yagami in a 3-way. 15 minute time limit
Result: Mina Shirakawa beat Saya Iida & Ranna Yagami in a 3-way by pinning Yagami. Afterwards, Shirakawa with microphone. She said “I’m baaaaaaaaack!” in English before addressing the crowd in Japanese. She won a couple titles in England while she wasn’t doing the HLAEW thing. She then said in English that Japan, England and the US all want Mina. The way she’s been acting lately, I’m surprised she didn’t follow Rossy Ogawa to Marigold. Her style is perfect for the grumpy old pervert.

Match 4: Mayu Iwatani, Koguma & Momo Kohgo vs. AZM, Suzu Suzuki & Miyu Amasaki. 20 minute time limit
Result: AZM, Suzu Suzuki & Miyu Amasaki beat Mayu Iwatani, Koguma & Momo Kohgo. Suzuki pinned Kohgo.

Result: Hazuki beat Hanan & Thekla in a 3-way by pinning Hanan. As a result, Hazuki will face Wonder Of Stardom Champion Natsupoi for the title at a later date. Lots of H.A.T.E. interference here.

Quick break for ring cleaning/maintenance.

Match 7: Tam Nakano, Natsupoi & Yuna Mizumori vs. Maika, Waka Tsukiyama & HANAKO. 30 minute time limit
Result: Maika, Waka Tsukiyama & HANAKO beat Tam Nakano, Natsupoi & Yuna Mizumori. HANAKO beat Mizumori. Long promos followed.

Injury Report: Yuya Uemura Update

As you may recall, New Japan’s Yuya Uemura was injured during the final stages of the G1 CLIMAX 34 on 8/10 and was forced to withdraw even though he still had a chance to advance to the Semifinals at the time. New Japan provided an update on his injury today. Torn triceps. Out 6 months. Unfortunately that will keep him out past Tokyo Dome in January and probably puts best-case for a return post-full recovery at February, but hopefully he can return for next year’s New Japan Cup (usually held in March). In comments in English on New Japan’s website, Uemura vowed to return even stronger.
