Hoshoryu (Y) beat Gonoyama (M2)
Leader: Shishi, Wakanosho (5-0)
Of note: No kinboshi handed out today for the first time this tournament as both Yokozuna won, Onosato getting to 2-3 and Hoshoryu one off the lead at 4-1. Kirishima took a tough first loss to winless Hiradoumi, which doesn’t end his Yokozuna hopes but every loss hurts. He can only afford one more loss, maybe two (worst-case 3 but 11-4 must include the championship for any chance). Aonishiki bounced back from his first loss with another win, so he now needs 6 more for Ozeki re-promotion. But it’s a pair of Maegashira in the lead-Shishi tends to do well when at lower ranks but when he gets higher up he struggles, while Wakanosho is a fast-rising star as the former Takakeisho’s (now Minatogawa) first true star trainee since taking over the former Tokiwayama Beya.
More kinboshi up for grabs tomorrow as Hoshoryu faces Hakunofuji who is also 4-1 and has 4 Gold Star Victories already including one from Hosboryu, and Onosato has Hiradoumi.

Juryo:
Tohakuryu (J12) beat Tochitaikai (J13)
Nishikigi (J14) beat Enho (J11)
Arashifuji (J13) beat Kagayaki (J11)
Kayo (J12) beat Tamashoho (J10)
Shirokuma (J9) beat Nishinoryu (J9)
Hatsuyama (J8) beat Hitoshi (J10)
Tamawashi (J7) beat Meisei (J7)
Midorifuji (J8) beat Kazekeno (J6)
Kitanowaka (J5) beat Oshoumi (J5)
Shonannoumi (J6) beat Toshinofuji (J4)
Tokihayate (J2) beat Tomokaze (J4)
Sadanoumi (J2) beat Kyokukaiyu (J1)
Asasuiryu (J1) beat Dewanoryu (J3)
Leader: Arashifuji, Shirokuma (5-0)
WITHDRAWAL: Oshoumi (M5). Right foot. Tournament over. Out indefinitely but needs surgery for a broken or fractured bone. Will finish the equivalent of 0-15 and may be demoted to Makushita in September. Kitanowaka got the fusen as a result.
Of note: That’s the 900th career win for Tamawashi, moving the Iron Man into 9th place all-time. Unfortunately for Enho fans Nishikigi showed up today and the loss drops Enho to 2-3. And that hoped-for Kagayaki match? Tomorrow. Newcomer Arashifuji shares the lead with Onosato stablemate Shirokuma, who has been very inconsistent since reaching Juryo and changing his name from Takahashi. But he has a favorable match for 6-0 tomorrow against 0-5 Meisei. Arashifuji faces Hatsuyama.

Lower tier notes: Kiryuko’s rapid climb back to Juryo has possibly come to a halt-no word on why and he’s not listed as a withdrawal but he missed today’s Makushita match and gave up a fusen as a result to fall to 1-2. No Asahifuji or Mita matches today. They both will be in action tomorrow.
