Here are the quick LIVE results from today’s Day 1-Opening Day-of the November 2026 Grand Sumo Tournament in Fukuoka:
Key: M-Maegashira, K-Komusubi, S-Sekiwake, O-Ozeki, Y-Yokozuna, J-Juryo

Makuuchi (top tier):
Scheduled to begin at 11 PM PT/2 AM ET.

Of note (preview): Onosato’s repeat title bid starts against Yoshinofuji, who the Yokozuna beat in September for the first time (Yoshinofuji won the first 4 meetings but one was a fusen when Onosato was injured). Churanoumi has quite the Sanyaku debut opponent-Hoshoryu. The Yokozuna won both their prior meetings this past year. Tamawashi returns for his 100th top tier tournament, now 3rd all-time. If he avoids demotion again he can tie Hakuho for 2nd at the end of 2027 (106) then tie leader Kaio (current Asakayama, 107) in January 2028 and pass him in March 2028. He faces Dewanoryu-they met twice in Juryo the last 2 tournaments and Tamawashi won both. Aonishiki has Asanoya a, which may be a first meeting. The other newcomers/returnees face each other as Arashifuji draws Kitanowaka (Kitanowaka won in September en route to the Juryo Championship) and Kyokukaiyu has Daiseizan (2-1 Daiseizan in Juryo).

Juryo:
Scheduled to begin at or just after 9 PM PT/midnight ET.

Of note (preview): Asahifuji’s proper Juryo debut will be against Tamashoho, a first-time meeting. The super-rookie came up for 2 days in September, first losing to Tochitaikai then beating Meisei. Wakatakakage’s rsurprise early eturn effort begins against Ryuden-if they met before it has been over a year and probably longer. Enho opens against the also-returning Wakanosho.

Lower tier notes:
Applicable updates will begin at 5 PM PT/8 PM ET. (Sunamusashi debut in Jonokuchi, other notable happenings. No matches for Eisei & Moriurara today, meaning their first matches will be tomorrow). Notable lower-tier withdrawals include Oshoum in Makushitai, who remains out due to injury and will continue his fall from the top tier down to the Sandanme in January. In Makushita, Tochitaikai starts his latest Juryo return bid today but Nishikigi does not. That will be tomorrow.
