A slightly above average episode overall and my least favorite Collision so far, but not a bad show by any means. Think of it more as a reset to start the post-CM Punk era of the program, so give it a few more weeks to see what will happen. Danielson-Starks does look like it’ll be the hot program for now.

End Show.

CM Punk beat Ricky Starks to retain the “real AEW World Championship”. Ricky Steamboat was special referee. Jim Ross returned to commentary for this match after a month-long absence for health reasons.

I missed the live broadcast due to scheduling conflicts so no comments or thoughts on what happened. Apparently the many title matches was to counterprogram against WWE SummerSlam (which I also did not watch live).

Added to Wednesday on Dynamite: NEW AEW Women’s Champion Hikaru Shida vs. Anna Jay for the title.

Next week: House Of Black-Punk/FTR for the Trios Titles, Statlander & Nightingale vs. Martinez & Diamante and The Acclaimed vs. TBA.

This is the last Collision recap for now due to a pause in site activity this month for planned vacations. I may be back in time for the 8/26 episode but more likely it will be the 9/2 episode.

AEW Collision 7/29/23 Results

Here are the quick results from tonight’s AEW Collision in Hartford, CT:

Toni Storm promo. She defends the AEW Women’s Championship Wednesday on Dynamite against Hikaru Shida.

Match 3: ROH TV Champion Samoa Joe vs. Gravity in a NON-TITLE match
Result: Samoa Joe beat Gravity. Squash.

CM Punk interviewed in the ring. Initial reaction mixed as usual, but more negative than positive. Not by much, I’d say 60-40 negative. He reveals his bag has “his” AEW World Championship belt and he spray paints an “X” on it which represents Punk, he’s back to being straight-edge and he is the real champion because he was never pinned or submitted for the title. Ricky Starks then comes out. They agree to a match next week for Punk’s version of the title, with wrestling legend Ricky Steamboat as guest referee.

Match 4: Gunn Club & Juice Robinson vs. El Hijo Del Vikingo, Action Andretti & Darius Martin
Result: Gunn Club & Juice Robinson beat El Hijo Del Vikingo, Action Andretti & Darius Martin. Colten Gunn pinned Martin after 3:10 To Yuma.

Match 5: Kiera Hogan vs. Mercedes Martinez
Result: Mercedes Martinez beat Kiera Hogan by submission

Main Event: AEW World Tag Team Champions FTR vs. MJF & Adam Cole for the titles. TV Time Remaining, which is about 25 minutes at the start
Result: AEW World Tag Team Champions FTR beat MJF & Adam Cole to retain the titles. Cash Wheeler pinned MJF.

Added to next week: AEW TBS Champion Kris Statlander vs. Mercedes Martinez for the title.

Another good show this week as Collision has established itself as a solid second program separate from Dynamite. Still some issues with commercials and timing that need to be worked on as well as women’s booking. The ladder match is a must-see.

End Show.

FTR brought out for interview. They go real-life past & present to deliver a message to Adam Cole & MJF, who get a title match next week for winning the Blind Eliminator Tag Team Tournament.

BLOOD & GUTS highlight video.

BREAKING: During the main event it was announced that Matthews-Andrade next week is now a Ladder Match with Andrade’s mask hanging above the ring. (Update: It was later mentioned that Malakai Black & Brody King are banned from the building for the match)

A good show overall, I enjoyed it and there really was nothing bad this week. Collision seems to be more clearly establishing its identity now as an alternate to Dynamite & Rampage and is doing some things right like giving main events a lot of time. I don’t like how it’s still just one women’s match though, but it seems like Tony Khan really doesn’t care about the women’s division much (see throwing Britt Baker in a squash on Dynamite Wednesday just to get a match on TV). Other than that, for the most part I’ve been enjoying Collision and it’s generally worth watching.

End Show.

Result: AEW Women’s Champion Toni Storm beat Taya Valkyrie to retain the title. The end of this match did not air live due to technical issues.

Match 3: AEW Tag Team Champions FTR vs. Juice Robinson & Jay White in a NON-TITLE match. It’s the usual Eliminator stip, meaning Robinson/White get a title shot if they win, but this time if they lose, no more chances as long as FTR are champs.

FTR interviewed backstage, interrupted immediately by White & Robinson. At White’s demand, the rematch for the titles will be next week and it will be a 2 of 3 Falls match.

Match 4: Scorpio Sky vs. Action Andretti
Result: Scorpio Sky beat Action Andretti

Main Event: Owen Hart Cup Men’s Semifinals: CM Punk vs. Samoa Joe
Result: CM Punk beat Samoa Joe. As a result, Punk advances to the Finals next week and will face Starks. Afterwards, Joe offered a handshake which Punk accepted, but Joe turned it into Coqina Clutch and choked Punk out before leaving as FTR came out. Starks then came out for a staredown from the ramp before slowly walking away to wrap things up.

End Show.

It was a fine show overall, slightly above average. Collision is still establishing its identity and this was only week 4, but they need to get rid of hard commercial breaks. They hardly do them during matches on Dynamite anymore and it gets annoying. Last-minute changes and postponing matches like Athena-Nightingale does not help either.

Next week: Both Owen Hart Cup Finals (Punk-Starks, Ruby Soho/Skye Blue-Athena/Nightingale) and FTR-White/Robinson in a 2/3 Falls match for the AEW Tag Team Championship. BOTB 7 airs immediately afterwards.
