New Japan wrapped up Round 2 of the New Japan Cup today, finishing setting up the Quarterfinals but there were changes to today’s card and the next round because Will Ospreay is now out of the tournament. He suffered a shoulder injury in his Round 2 win and is out indefinitely. It seems the man he beat to advance, Mark Davis, will take his place and be tasked with stopping EVIL from reaching the semifinals.

Today’s event was held at ZIP Arena Okayama in Okayama and can be watched on demand on New Japan World.

The announced paid attendance was 1298.

Match 1: Aaron Henare beat Yuto Nakashima by submission. This was to have been Nakashima & Oskar Leube vs. Henare & Jeff Cobb but Leube was removed from the event and Cobb was a replacement for Ospreay in Match 2.

Match 2: Jeff Cobb & Aussie Open beat Ryohei Oiwa, YOSHI-HASHI & Hirooki Goto. Mark Davis pinned Oiwa after Waterslide.

Matxh 3: TAKA Michinoku, DOUKI, Yoshinobu Kanemaru & Taichi beat Dick Togo, Sho, Yujiro Takahashi & EVIL. Taichi pinned Togo after Seitei Jujiro.

As a result of today, the final Quarterfinal will be Finlay vs. Umino.

DEVELOPING: New Japan Cup Change

New Japan has announced an unexpected change to the New Japan Cup Tournament: Will Ospreay, who advanced to the Quarterfinals with a Round 2 win Monday, is now OUT. Shoulder injury suffered in the win. Out indefinitely. Mark Davis, who Ospreay beat in Round 2, announced he will be the replacement but this has not been made official. If official as we are lef to believe, Davis will face EVIL in the Quarterfinals. There were also changes made to today’s event.

Today’s event was held at Item Ehime in Ehime and can be watched on demand on New Japan World.

New Japan continued the New Japan Cup today with the second day of Round 2 action, which would set up the second match of the Quarterfinals. There is potential for an all-United Empire section of the bracket to continue depending on what happened.

Today’s event was held at Shiga Prefectural Cultural Industry Community House Event Hall in Shiga and can be watched on demand on New Japan World.

The announced paid attendance was 789.

Match 1: Ryohei Oiwa & Ren Narita beat Oskar Leube & Tomoaki Honma. Narita beat Leube with a Figure 4.

UPDATE: After today’s event New Japan confirmed on Twitter the New Japan Cup winner will, as is traditionally the case, get an IWGP World Heavyweight Championship match against Kazuchika Okada at SAKURA GENESIS in April.

New Japan began Round 2 of the New Japan Cup today with the first 2 matches, which would set up the first of the Quarterfinals beginning next week.

Round 2 of the Cup is now set. Interesting statistic: 12 of the 16 cumulatively represent one of Bullet Club, LIJ or United Empire. And half of that is just United Empire as all 6 members are in Round 2. But all can’t advance further as Mark Davis faces Will Ospreay next. The winner then could get Cobb in the Quarterfinals.

Round 2 begins tomorrow at Aichi Prefectural Gym in Nagoya with Tetsuya Naito vs. Chase Owens and SANADA vs. KENTA. The winners meet in the Quarterfinals so it could be all Bullet Club of all LIJ. Or Bullet Club vs. LIJ again! Live streaming on New Japan World will begin at 3 AM ET/midnight PT.

In other news, the next round of TAMASHII events has been announced for 4/14-4/16 in Australia. 4/14 will be the debut event in Adelaide, 4/15 will be the Sydney return, 4/16 will be the Melbourne return. Additionally, a 5/21 US event, RESURGENCE, has been announced for Long Beach, CA. That will be a STRONG LIVE event and should be a PPV on FITE.

New Japan News: Card Changes This Week

New Japan has announced some changes to event lineups for this week because of David Finlay joining Bullet Club at yesterday’s 51st Anniversary event (none affect the New Japan Cup):

Tomorrow, Finlay replaces Gedo to team with El Phantasmo, Chase Owens & KENTA to face Taichi, Yoshinobu Kanemaru, El Desperado & DOUKI & TAKA Michinoku. He was to have teamed with Lio Rush & Tama Tonga to face LIJ. Tomoaki Honma is the replacement.

Friday, Finlay joins Bullet Club for an 8-man tag against Minoru Suzuki, El Desperado, Ren Narita & Ryusuke Taguchi. He was to have been in another 8-man tag against United Empire. Honma again is the replacement.

Finally, announced for Saturday is Finlay & El Phantasmo vs. Kosei Fujita & Zack Sabre Jr. This card had been unannounced before so no changes.

New Japan 3/6/23 Results

On March 6, 1972, Shin Nihon Puroresu aka New Japan Pro Wrestling held its first official event. The promotion continued its annual tradition of holding an anniversary event aka Flag Raising Day event today, celebrating their 51st Anniversary (but first without the pate Antonio Inoki, the founder of New Japan and Hall of Famer).
