Injury Report: Dethroned King

There have been various injury reports about AEW/New Japan star Eddie Kingston recently following his STRONG Openweight Championship loss to Gabriel Kidd at Resurgence, the final nail in the Continental Crown coffin in AEW (Kingston once held all 3 titles together-the AEW Continental Championship, ROH World Championship and STRONG Openweight Championship-they are now no longer unified). It was originally thought to he bad, then it went to worse and now it’s much worse. Fractured tibia, broken leg, torn ACL and torn meniscus. So leg AND knee. No surgery before the tibia fracture heals. Out at least 1 year based on this update, as the fracture healing is expected to take 2 months then expected recovery time post-surgery is another 10 months at best. It all happened on 5/11 when his leg hit the guardrail on a suplex spot in a no rope last man standing match won by Kidd.

AEW Dynamite & Rampage 5/1/24 LIVE Results

Here are the quick results from tonight’s AEW Dynamite AND LIVE Rampage from Winnipeg, Canada:

Dynamite:
Tony Khan is in Jacksonville selling what happened last week. His feed gets cut out by The Young Bucks, who say because of this they’re running the show now.

Swerve Strickland comes out first. He calls out who will be his next challenger for the AEW World Championship at Double Or Nothing, but The Bucks interrupt to introduce said challenger-Christian Cage. He & the Patriarchy beat down Strickland & Prince Nana, culminating with Killswitch legit ripping some of Strickland’s hair off his head.

Match 1: AEW TNT Champion Adam Copeland vs. one of House Of Black for the title. Who it is was not revealed in advance. It was revealed to be Buddy Matthews.
Result: AEW TNT Champion Adam Copeland beat Buddy Matthews to retain the title. Matthews may have been legit injured when he took a stiff elbow on a diving crossbody from Copeland to his midsection.

Match 2; Samoa Joe vs. Isaiah Kassidy
Result: Samoa Joe beat Isaiah Kassidy. Squash.

Skye Blue promo.

Orange Cassidy interviewed. He says Chuck Taylor will never wrestle again after a parking lot fight with Trent Beretta last weekend. Trent interrupts. Cassidy charges him but security keeps them apart. During this, Don Callis makes a move on Cassidy.

Match 3: FTW Champion Chris Jericho vs. Katsuyori Shibata for the title
Result: FTW Champion Chris Jericho beat Katsuyori Shibata to retain the title.

WIllow NIghtingale accepts Blue’s challenge for an AEW TBS Championship match. Added to Rampage. The Bucks add a stip-Kris Statlander & Stokely Hathaway are banned from ringside and if either interfere, Nightingale is stripped of the title.

Match 4: Claudio Castagnoli vs. Brian Cage
Result: Claudio Castagnoli beat Brian Cage by submission

Next week: Copeland vs. Brody King for the TNT Championship and Cassidy vs. Beretta.

Added to Rampage tonight: Konosuke Takeshita vs. London Lightning.

Rocky Romero interviewed. He’s done with Best Friends and is going after titles now. He challenges Kyle O’Reilly for Rampage tonight which likely finalizes the Rampage lineup.

Match 5: Mariah May vs. Serena Deeb
Result: Serema Deeb beat Mariah May by ref stoppage (towel). Towel thrown in by Toni Storm.

Justin Roberts does THE INTRO for Kenny Omega. You know what that means…NORTH CA-RO-LI-NA!!! This continues into Rampage.

Rampage:
Omega promo continues past the normal Dynamite overrun. At about that time Kazuchika Okada comes out. It’s a setup for a Jack Perry ambush. Omega tries to fight it off but when he goes for a V-Trigger Okada breaks it up and Perry hits Omega with a chair. The Bucks come out for a EVP Trigger. The Elite pose with the wounded Omega but FTR quickly comes out to make the save.
I figured this was how they would write Omega off TV long-term to have surgery for diverticulitis. The promo was absolutely hot and legit scary as he talked about the medical ramifications of his condition and what it means for his health. Absolute must-see.

Back to commentary then back to backstage as The Elite attack FTR again and dump Omega off the stretcher by the ambulance.

Matt Menard replaces Taz on commentary for Rampage.

Match 1: Jay White vs. Dante Martin
Result: Jay White beat Dante Martin

Deonna Purrazzo interviewed.

Swerve Strickland promo. More with Christian Cage promised for Dynamite next week but he won’t be alone.

Match 2: Rocky Romero vs. Kyle O’Reilly
Result: Kyle O’Reilly beat Rocky Romero

Main Event: AEW TBS Champion Willow Nightingale vs. Skye Blue in a Manitoba Massacre for the title. Anything Goes. Stokely Hathaway & Kris Statlander banned from ringside, if either interfere Nightingale is stripped of the title
Result: AEW TBS Champion WIllow NIghtingale beat Kris Statlander to retain the title.

Konosuke Takeshita vs. London Lighting did not happen, at least not on TV. I’m guessing time constraints because the Omega promo segment ran extremely long.

Dynamite was an enjoyable episode for me this week, it was nice to not have Tony Khan anywhere near it except at the beginning, and he stayed off the socials too. The Strickland-Cage and Omega promos really elevated the show. Matches were okay, not great but not bad either. Rampage suffered from Dynamite running way over despite a nearly 10-minute overrun, the main event was rushed and I don’t like the women having to resort to hardcore garbage matches to get time & reactions from the crowd, but the effort was absolutely there as always. Rampage can be skipped. The Omega promo segment is must-see.

No Collision this week. Rampage follows Collision next week and both will be on TBS, not TNT.

Also next week on Dynamite: Harley Cameron vs. Mariah May and Serena Deeb promo.

AEW Dynamite 4/24/24 Results

Here are the quick results from tonight’s LIVE NATIONWIDE AEW Dynamite from Daily’s Place (Jacksonville, FL):

As the show begins, The Young Bucks & Jack Perry are shown arriving earlier today. Security tries to keep Perry out but they get blown off.

Orange Cassidy comes out but gets a beatdown by Trent Beretta quickly. Chuck Taylor then comes out. Trent tells Taylor to make a decision and Taylor lays out Trent before demanding a parking lot fight because Taylor isn’t going to be medically cleared to compete. Trent leaves.

Jon Moxley promo.

Match 1; AEW World Champion Swerve Strickland vs. Kyle Fletcher in a NON-TITLE match. Usual “eliminator” gimmick meaning a title rematch for Fletcher if he wins
Result: Swerve Strickland beat Kyle Fletcher. Feed went out during split-screen commercial.

Next week: Kenny Omega returns. Hometown appearance (Winnipeg, Canada).

Thunder Rosa interviewd. Deonna Purrazzo interrupts and things quickly get heated.

Match 2: Mina Shirakawa (Stardom) vs. Anna Jay
Result: Mina Shirakawa beat Anna Jay. More split-screen issues. Anna broke up the post-match celebration and choked out Mariah May until Toni Storm made the save. Then Serena Deeb came out and sat next to the AEW Women’s Championship belt Storm left on the stairs of the entrance and called her shot to the camera.

Willow Nightingale Championship Celebration Mercedes Mone interrupts and tensions quickly boil over ahead of their AEW TBS Championship match at Double Or Nothing. Mone bitch-slaps Nightingale at the end. Very hot starting build.

Match 3: Casino Gauntlet Match. Staggered entry like a battle royal but first pinfall/submission wins and gets an AEW International Championship shot at Double Or Nothing.
Order of entry: Jay White, Dante Martin, Penta El Zero M, Kyle O’Reilly, Will Ospreay, Lance Archer, Komander, Jay Lethal
Result: Will Ospreay won by pinning Komander. As a result, Ospreay will face AEW International Champion Roderick Strong for the title at Double Or Nothing

Chris Jericho promo. He puts himself over as new FTW Champion and lays the roots for his next faction as The Learning Tree. Big Bill comes out wanting to be his first recruit.

Main Event: IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Jon Moxley vs. Powerhouse Hobbs for the title. 1 Hour time limit
Result: IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Jon Moxley beat Powerhouse Hobbs by ref stoppage (technical submission) to retain the title. V1 for Moxley.

Next week: FTW Champion Chris Jericho vs. Katsuyori Shibata for the title.

Jack Perry & Tony Khan face-to-face meeting in the ring follows the main event. About 7 minutes TV time left. They shook hands & hugged it out, which was the dead giveaway as Perry smiled at the camera. He then laid out Khan with a microphone punch to the midsection then The Elite came out. The Young Bucks hit a Meltzer Driver on Khan and left him laid out in the ring before leaving. Once they were gone the roster began spilling into the ring as we cut away. Commentary either was cut off or was dead silent after the driver.

There apparently were a lot of technical issues tonight. A lot was said about major audio issues but I had no such problems, just with no picture-in-picture during commercials. I could see the commercials fine but no matches. The lineup wasn’t much on paper but thankfully it was not as bad as it looked. Turned out to be an average to just-above-average show despite no real Dynasty fallout, but some of the Double Or Nothing build got off to a hot start, in particular with Mone-Nightingale. I loved the ending of course but the aforementioned women’s segment is must-see.

Saturday on Collision LIVE NATIONWIDE after NBA Playoffs coverage on TNT (or 8:30 PM ET/5:30 PM PT, whichever is later): Bullet Club vs. Top Flight & Action Andretti for the Trios Championships, Toni Storm vs. Anna Jay.
Saturday On Rampage after Collision:: Thunder Rosa vs. Deonna Purrazzo and Trent Beretta vs. Chuck Taylor in a Parking Lot Fight
