All-Japan Pro Wrestling 10/21/23 Results

All-Japan wraps up the 51st Anniversary Series today with a major event headlined by 2 title matches. In the first one, the All-Japan and KO-D 6-Man Tag Team Champions Yukio Sakaguchi, Saki Akai & Hideki Okatani return to defend the All-Japan titles against the mixed trio of Suwama, Mayumi Ozaki & Maya Yukihi. Then in the main event it’s a rematch between Kento Miyahara & Yuma Aoyagi for the Triple Crown, coming shortly after they lost the All-Japan World Tag Team Championship. They are clearly the top two stars in the promotion right now but who is going to come out on top?

Today’s event will be held at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo and can be watched LIVE on AJPW.TV in Japanese. It’s not yet known if this will be a TV simulcast in Japan. I have a feeling the main event will be epic and potentially a marathon (over 30 minutes) so I’m predicting the event’s total running time will be in the range of 2 1/2-3 hours, but no more than 4 hours tops based on time limits.

Today’s lineup:
Takao Omori & Yoshitatsu vs. Atsuki Aoyagi & Rising Hayato
Dan Tamura vs. Shinya Aoki
Shuji Ishikawa, Ren Ayabe & Black Menso-re vs. Sanshiro Takagi, HARASHIMA & Yukio Naya (DDT)
Minoru Suzuki, Naruki Doi & Hokuto Omori vs. Hideki Suzuki (Pro Wrestling NOAH), Koji Iwamoto & Ryo Inoue
All-Japan 6-Man Tag Team Champions Yukio Sakaguchi, Saki Akai & HIdeki Okatani (DDT) vs. Suwama, Mayumi Ozaki (OZ Academy) & Maya Yukihi (Independent/Freelancer) for the titles
All-Japan 51st Anniversary Match: Ryuki Honda & Yuma Anzai vs. Jun & Rei Saito
All-Japan Triple Crown Champion Yuma Aoyagi vs. Kento Miyahara for the Triple Crown

Updates below will begin at 7:30 PM PT/10:30 PM ET.

7:20 PM PT UPDATE: Live updates begin now…

We are LIVE from Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan. We’re in pre-show mode so no commentary yet.

The paid attendance will be announced after the event. The crowd is still filing in and advance ticket sales looked good, so I’m thinking it’ll be in the 1200-1250 range, which would be anywhere from 80-95% full. (UPDATE: The announced paid attendance was 1370, a super full house/very near sellout)

The matches will begin in about 15 minutes. At 7:25 PM PT the entire roster comes out for pre-event activities. Notably not getting in the ring and not wearing All-Japan jackets: Jun & Rei Saito. This is most likely related to the promotion’s 51st Anniversary. Suprisingly no muted audio between this and the opening video.

The matches begin at 7:35 PM PT. Looks like it’s perhaps a Samurai! TV broadcast in Japan based on the match rundown presentation and onscreen graphics. There was a typo in the match rundown graphics, Rising Hayato’s kanji (all English caps) was misspelled as “HYATO”.(Late show update: It’s Samurai! TV. Durign main event intros I saw Kagehiro Osano on commentary at ringside, he usually does commentary on their simulcasts for WRESTLE UNIVERSE)

Match 1: Takao Omori & Yoshitatsu vs. Atsuki Aoyagi & Rising Hayato. 15 minute time limit
Result: Atsuki Aoyagi & Rising Hayato beat Takao Omori & Yoshitatsu. Hayato pinned Yoshitatsu with a jackknife after an Aoyagi dropkick.

Match 2: Dan Tamura vs. Shinya Aoki. 15 minute time limit
Result: Time Limit Draw. This was a grappling/submission wrestling exhibition clinic

Match 3: Shuji Ishikawa, Ren Ayabe & Black Menso-re vs. Sanshiro Takagi, HARASHIMA & Yukio Naya (DDT). 20 minute time limit
Result; Sanshiro Takagi, HARASHIMA & Yukio Naya beat Shuji Ishikawa, Ren Ayabe & Black Menso-re. Takagi pinned Menso-re after a sitout powerbomb. Comedy match at times because of Takagi and his super bicycle riding through the reserved seats. Afterwardh, Jun & Rei Saito came out and brawled witH Naya & HARASHIMA into the backstage area.

Match 4: Minoru Suzuki, Naruki Doi & Hokuto Omori vs. Hideki Suzuki (Pro Wrestling NOAH), Koji Iwamoto & Ryo Inoue. 20 minute time limit
Result: Minoru Suzuki, Naruki Doi & Hokuto Omori beat Hideki Suzuki, Koji Iwamoto & Ryo Inoue. Suzuki pinned Inoue after a Gotch-style piledriver.

The Real World Tag League is announced for November & December, along with the 10 teams entered. 9 of them anyway, one is TBA. DDT participation will continue with Yukio Skaaguchi & Hideki Okatani as well. The tournament runs from 11/12-12/6.

Match 5: All-Japan 6-Man Tag Team Champions Yukio Sakaguchi, Saki Akai & HIdeki Okatani (DDT) vs. Suwama, Mayumi Ozaki (OZ Academy) & Maya Yukihi (Independent/Freelancer) for the titles. 1 Hour time limit
Result: Suwama, Mayumi Ozaki & Maya Yukihi beat All-Japan 6-Man Tag Team Champions Yukio Sakaguchi, Saki Akai & Hideki Okatani by ref stoppage to win the titles. Suwama, Ozaki & Yukihi become the 7th All-Japan 6-Man Tag Team Champions. Suwama beat Akai with a sleeper hold. I’m not totally surprised this happened because Akai is retiring next month and this is probably her final appearance in All-Japan.

Match 6: All-Japan 51st Anniversary Match: Ryuki Honda & Yuma Anzai vs. Jun & Rei Saito. 30 minute time limit
Result: Jun & Rei Saito beat Ryuki Honda & Yuma Anzai. Rei Saito pinned Anzai after a Jun Saito lariat off the top rope (Doomsday Device).

A brief (less than 1 minute) countdown leads into the promo video for the main event.

Main Event: All-Japan Triple Crown Champion Yuma Aoyagi vs. Kento Miyahara for the Triple Crown. 1 Hour time limit. They did extra special versions of entrances with additional promo video for both. Very big-match feel and hype.
Result: All-Japan Triple Crown Champion Yuma Aoyagi beat Kento Miyahara to retain the Triple Crown. V5 for Aoyagi. They went just short of 30 minutes. Right after it ended a sudden shriek from the crowd…Katsuhiko Nakajima!!! He has flowers and…NAILS MIYAHARA WITH THEM! A clue as to what is to come after next Saturday when Nakajima finishes up with Pro Wrestling NOAH? Unless that was also a clue as to what is next, because of the Real World Tag League Aoyagi may very well be Triple Crown Champion going into 2024. On his way out, Aoyagi took a victory lap around and high-fived fans in the front row, picking up what was left of the flowers and giving them to a female fan. It was mainly the plastic wrap…but still, that’s quite a souvenir given what happened to end the show.

The next event is 10/31 at Imakanemachi General Gymnasium Aikubu in Hokkaido, kicking off a week-long series in northern Japan. There will be no live broadcast. It will be available on demand on AJPW.TV later that day (US time).

News: Impact Star Headed To All-Japan (Updated 10/19)

All-Japan posted a YouTube video today announcing that Jonathan Gresham, currently competing in Impact Wrestling, will be making his All-Japan debut soon. He will be heading there later this month (probably after this weekend’s Bound For Glory PPV and TV tapings, or possibly after Impact’s England tour next week) and has already challenged El Lindaman for the All-Japan Word Junior Heavyweight Championship. Based on mentions of Hokkaido and the next tour schedule after that (plus it also will have a Jr. Battle Of Glory tournament), such a match could possibly happen between 10/31-11/5 during a scheduled week-long Hokkaido tour before an 11/12 Korakuen Hall event.

Gresham has competed in Japan for New Japan Pro Wrestling before but this will be his first time in All-Japan.

More as it becomes available.

10/19 UPDATE: The title match will happen on 11/5.

All-Japan Pro Wrestling 9/23/23 Results

All-Japan wraps up the Giant Series 2023 today with a major event in Tokyo, headlined by 2 title matches. In the first match, Hikaru Sato will try to bring the World Junior Heavyweight Championship back to All-Japan when he faces GLEAT star and current champion El Lindaman for the title. In the main event, Ryuki Honda will try to become the youngest Triple Crown Champion in history when he faces champion Yuma Aoyagi. DDT and Minoru Suzuki participation highlight the undercard along with Hideki Suzuki from Pro Wrestling NOAH making an appearance.

Today’s event will be held at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo and can be watched LIVE on AJPW.TV in Japanese. It will probably be a TV simulcast in Japan on either Samurai! TV or GAORA Sports. Based on the lineup and title matches I anticipate this event having a total runtime of 2 1/2-3 hours so fans will have plenty of time to get to Ryogoku Kokugikan for the penultimate day of sumo, at least for the key top tier bouts.

Today’s lineup (in order):
Yoshitatsu & Osamu Nishinura vs. Black Menso-re & Ren Ayabe
T-Hawk, Kaz Hayashi & Jack Cartwheel vs. Toshizo, Jun & Rei Saito
Shuji Ishikawa & Yuma Anzai vs. Hideki Suzuki & Koji Iwamoto
Kento Miyahara, Rising Hayato & Atsuki Aoyagi vs. Minoru Suzuki, Naruki Doi & Hokuto Omori
Suwama, Dan Tamura & Ryo Inoue vs. Yukio Naya, Yuya Koroku & Rukiya
All-Japan World Junior Heavyweight Champion El Lindaman vs. Hikaru Sato for the title
All-Japan Triple Crown Champion Yuma Aoyagi vs. Ryuki Honda for the Triple Crown

Updates below will begin at 7:30 PM PT/10:30 PM ET.

7:29 PM PT UPDATE: Live updates begin now…

We are LIVE from Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan. Normally they start muted during opening announcements but not this time. After these finish we go muted for a moment.

The paid attendance will be announced after the event. Crowd still filing in but it looks like maybe 70% full from what we can see so far, so I’m guessing it’ll be around 900. (UPDATE: The announced paid attendance was 1161)

The matches will begin shortly.

The matches begin at 7:35 PM PT. There doesn’t seem to be the usual TV simulcast in Japan but there is Japanese commentary. There is also a notable difference in volume levels when they switch between the hard camera and ringside handheld video camera views (the latter being much lower).

Match 1: Yoshitatsu & Osamu Nishinura vs. Black Menso-re & Ren Ayabe. 20 minute time limit
Result: Yoshitatsu & Osamu Nishimura beat Black Menso-re & Ren Ayabe. Nishimura pinned Yoshitatsu with a backslide.

Match 2: T-Hawk (GLEAT), Kaz Hayashi (GLEAT) & Jack Cartwheel vs. Toshizo, Jun & Rei Saito. 20 minute time limit
Result: T-Hawk, Kaz Hayashi & Jack Cartwheel beat Toshizo, Jun & Rei Saito. Cartwheel pinned Toshizo after a top rope cartwheel. That’s a huge win for the US indy guy who I saw make his AEW debut earlier this year in person.

Match 3: Shuji Ishikawa & Yuma Anzai vs. Hideki Suzuki (Pro Wrestling NOAH) & Koji Iwamoto. 20 minute time limit
Result: Time Limit Draw

Match 4: Kento Miyahara, Rising Hayato & Atsuki Aoyagi vs. Minoru Suzuki, Naruki Doi & Hokuto Omori. 30 minute time limit
Result: Minoru Suzuki, Naruki Doi & Hokuto Omori beat Kento Miyahara, Rising Hayato & Atsuki Aoyagi. Omori pinned Aoyagi. Afterwards, Omori kept Miyahara from leaving and seemingly taunted him in the ring, but his attempt at embarrassing Miyahara led to Omori getting a low blow.

Upcoming event and match announcements include the Jr. Battle Of Glory 2023 for November. Participants: Atsuki Aoyagi, Rising Hayato, Dan Tamura, Hikaru Sato, Fuminori Abe, Naruki Doi, Koki Iwamoto and Ryo Inoue. That tournament starts on 11/12 and ends on 12/6, it will be a round-robin tournament. They also will hold their year-ending event on 12/31 in Tokyo, I think it’ll be at Yoyogi National Stadium Gym 2. Also a title match for 10/9: All-Japan World Tag Team Champions Kento Miyahara & Yuma Aoyagi vs. Jun & Rei Saito for the titles.

Match 5: Suwama, Dan Tamura & Ryo Inoue vs. Yukio Naya, Yuya Koroku & Rukiya. 30 minute time limit
Result: Suwama, Dan Tamura & Ryo Inoue beat Yukio Naya, Yuya Koroku & Rukiya. Tamura pinned Rukiya.

Match 6: All-Japan World Junior Heavyweight Champion El Lindaman (GLEAT) vs. Hikaru Sato for the title. 1 Hour time limit

Main Event: All-Japan Triple Crown Champion Yuma Aoyagi vs. Ryuki Honda for the Triple Crown. 1 Hour time limit
Result: All-Japan Triple Crown Champion Yuma Aoyagi beat Ryuki Honda to retain the Triple Crown. V4 for Aoyagi. Next up…forget being his partner and fellow All-Japan World Tag Team Champion, Kento Miyahara wants the Triple Crown back! Aoyagi apparently accepts, we’ll see what happens. After Miyahara mic drops and heads off, Aoyagi finishes his post-match promo to end the show.

The next event is NEW AGE CHRONICLE-Z ~JUMP OVER~ on 10/5 at Shin-Kiba 1st Ring in Tokyo. The event features only wrestlers with less than 10 years experience and is based on an idea from Rising Hayato. Broadcast plans TBA. (Update: 10/5 is now a legit advance sellout)

Injury Report: Japan Injury Roundup (Updated x3)

There have been A LOT of injuries recently across the major Japanese promotions. Here are some of the latest updates:

New Japan-Yoshinobu Kanemaru is now off the rest of the Road to DESTRUCTION Tour. Knee injury suffered earlier this week. Boltin Oleg, was was out since last weekend due to a fever and arm infection (they were related), is cleared to return.

All-Japan/GLEAT-Sayaka Unagi is out indefinitely. Left shoulder injury suffered yesterday. For All-Japan, she was to have faced Sunny tomorrow. SAKI (not Saki Akai) is the replacement. For GLEAT, she is off the 9/17 event.

Stardom-Momo Kohga, Lady C, Miyu Amasaki and Mai Sakurai all will miss some of all of the rest of the 5 STAR GP, which runs through 9/30.

UPDATE: Tokyo Joshi Pro announced Neko Haruna has multiple knee and ACL injuries and will have surgery in October. Out several months if not longer. She will appear on 10/9 but not compete.

UPDATE 2: 9/14-what is going on in TJPW? For their event Saturday they have had to blow the card up. Not one, not two, not three…but SIX wrestlers are now off-Mizuki, Yuki Kamifuku, Nao Kakuta, Mahiro Kiryu, Raku and HIMAWARI. The very vague poor physica condition for all beyond illnesses. Add Neko Haruna (knees) and that’s 7 in the last few days. They somehow still are managing 7 matches scheduled with Ryo Mizunami being a late add. As compensation, any fan in attendance can request and will be given a colored piece of paper autographed by a random wrestler.

UPDATE 3: 9/15-Something is going around TJPW as now they have announced Wakana Uehara is now off tomorrow. Fever. So that’s now 7 off tomorrow, 8 if you count Neko Haruna. That’s about 1/3 of the roster.
