Sumo-March 2023 Grand Sumo Tournament Day 14 Results (3/25/23) (Top 2 Tiers)

Here are the quick results from today’s Day 14 of the March 2023 Grand Sumo Tournament in Osaka:
Key: M-Maegashita, K-Komusubi, S-Sekiawke, J-Juryo, Ms-Makushita

Makuuchi )Top Tier):
Shonannoumi (J3) beat Mitoryu (M17)
Oho (M15) beat Myogiryu (M10)
Nishikifuji (M10) beat Tsurugisho (M16)
Aoiyama (M9) beat Bushozan (M14)
Hokuseiho (M15) beat Hiradoumi (M9)
Takarafuji (M12) beat Ichiyamamoto (M8)
Ura (M8) beat Azumaryu (M11)
Chiyoshoma (M16) beat Hokutofuji (M7)
Takayasu (M7) beat Kotoeko (M13)
Kotoshoho (M5) beat Kagayaki (M9)
Takanosho (M11) beat MItakeumi (M3)
Kinbozan (M14) beat Abi (M2)
NIshikigi (M3) beat Ryuden (M2)
Sadanoumi (M6) beat Tamawashi (M1)
Shodai (M1) beat Daishoho (M13)
Tobizaru (K) beat Mesei (M4)
Daieisho (K) beat Midorifuji (M5)
Endo (M6) beat Kotonowaka (K)
Kiribayama (S) beat Wakatakakage (S) by default/withdrawal
Hoshoryu (S) beat Wakamotoharu (K)
Leader: Daieisho (12-2)
WITHDRAWAL: Wakatakakage (S). Right leg injury. Out the Final Day, meaning there is a real chance he will be demoted after over a year at Sekiwake as his final record will be the equivalent of 7-8 (7-7-1).
Of note: Another Isegahama collapse officially complete. It’s over for Midorifuji after his 4th straight loss takes him from 10-0 and a 2 win lead to 10-4 and now out of it. It’s down to Daieisho vs. Kiribayama tomorrow. If Daieisho wins, he is the champion for the second time. If Kiribayama wins, there will be a playoff and immediate rematch for the championship. A Kiribayama win in his Sekiwake debut would jump-start his Ozeki hopes and could get him there after May if he can duplicate this performance. Hoshoryu still has a chance at Ozeki contention if he can win his final match (Takayasu) as that would be 30 wins over the last 3 tournaments. Today’s win also gives Kinbozan a chance at a Special Prize, likely Fighting Spirit, and a win over Takanosho tomorrow should lock it up as he would finish 11-4 with that win.

Juryo:
Shimanoumi (J11) beat Kawazoe (Ms3)
Ochiai (J14) beat Kotokuzan (J10)
Tamashoho (J13) beat Tsushimanada (J9)
Tomokaze (J13) beat Atamifuji (J8)
Akua (J7) beat Tochimusashi (J12)
Gonoyama (J6) beat Takakento (J12)
Roga (J5) beat Hidenoumi (J8)
Daiamami (J6) beat Chiyomaru (J4)
Oshoma (J4) beat Kitanowaka (J11)
Ichinojo (J3) beat Enho (J5)
Churanoumi (J5) beat Chiyonokuni (J2)
Tochinoshin (J2) beat Tokushoryu (J14)
Asanoyama (J1) beat Shimazuumi (J7)
Hakuyozan (J9) beat Tohakuryu (J1)
Leader: Ichinojo (13-1)
Of note: It all depends on Ichinojo. If he wins his match tomorrow, or if he loses but Asanoyama also loses, Ichinojo is the champion. If Ichinojo loses and Asanoyama wins, playoff rematch. On paper tomorrow, very heavy advantage Ichinojo because he draws Tsushimanada (4-10). Asanoyama will know his fate before the final match and he has the much tougher draw in Ochiai (10-4), who seems to have recovered from an earlier elbow injury that led to a 3-match losing streak after an 8-1 start and is finishing strong with 2 straight wins. And Kawazoe, the Makushita Human Slinky, was just that again in a very tough loss to Shimanoumi that will probably keep him in Makushita in May despite a promotion already clinched (he’ll finish 4-3 but from Ms3 that probably only gets him so Ms1). He certainly gained a lot more fans in replicating his career debut performance against Asanoyama. The way he can bend so far back before going down is just unhuman! He deserved the loud cheers and applause from the fans.
Nobody in the top tier tomorrow due to another withdrawal but as is tradition a couple of Makushita men near the top rankings get to come up for bouts tomorrow-Tsukahara (Ms1 but already demoted at 2-5) and Chiyonoumi (Ms5 and going for promotion at 3-3).

Reminder: NHK World Japan will have 90 minutes of LIVE top tier coverage tomorrow FOR FREE, including the final matches, awards ceremony and champion’s interview, beginning tomorow at 12:30 AM PT/3:30 AM ET.

Sumo-March 2023 Grand Sumo Tournament Day 13 Results (Lower Tier Championships) (Updated)

Here are the quick results from today’s Day 13 of the March 2023 Grand Sumo Tourbament in Osaka:
Key: M-Maegashira, K-Komusubi, S-Sekiwake, J-Juryo, Ms-Makushita, Sd-Sandanme, Jd-Jonidan, Jk-Jonokuchi

Makuuchi (Top Tier):
Ichinojo (J3) beat Bushozan (M14)
Mitoryu (M17) beat Takanosho (M11)
Azumaryu (M11) beat Oho (M15)
Nishikifuji (M10) beat Hokuseiho (M15)
Takarafuji (M12) beat Myogiryu (M10)
Kinbozan (M14) beat Hiradoumi (M9)
Tsurugisho (M16) beat Aoiyama (M9)
Ura (M8) beat Daishoho (M13)
Kotoeko (M13) beat Ichiyamamoto (M8)
Takayasu (M7) beat Chiyoshoma (M16)
Nishikigi (M3) beat Kagayaki (M12)
Sadanoumi (M6) beat Mitakeumi (M3)
Shodai (M1) beat Ryuden (M2)
Kotoshoho (M5) beat Tamawashi (M1)
Abi (M2) beat Tobizaru (K)
Daieisho (K) beat Meisei (M2)
Wakamotoharu (K) beat Hokutofuji (M7)
Kiribayama (S) beat Endo (M6)
Hoshoryu (S) beat Midorifuji (M5)
Wakatakakage (S) beat Kotonowaka (K)
Leader: Daieisho (11-2)
Of note: Another Isegahama collapse complete. A few tournaments ago it was Hokutofuji unbeaten and in control going into the final stretch before he collapsed over the final 5 days. Now it’s Midorifuji who has now lost 3 straight and the lead to Daieisho. And history indicated he was the heavy favorite against Hoshoryu, having won 5 of their 6 prior meetings. Of all with a chance still, Daieisho is the only former champion as he is perhaps 2 days away from his second Emperor’s Cup and almost certainly a return to Sekiwake. Snayaku will be roadblocked again outside of Komusubi because all the 4th highest ranked wrestlers except To izaru have winning records but are looking at not being promoted just because of numbers unless Hoshoru is promoted to Ozeki-slim chances but still possible with an 11-4 finish. Ichinojo keeps the Juryo lead with his win as it’s now down to him and Asanoyama before both return to the top tier in May.
Key match tomorrow: Daieisho-Midorifuji. If Daieisho wins, then Kiribayama loses (Wakatakakage) and Wakamotoharu loses (Hosboryu), Daieisho is the champion. If Midorifuji wins, that potentially all but guarantees a playoff on the Final Day.

Juryo:
Tokihayate (Ms3) beat Tochimusashi (J12)
Tamashoho (J14) beat Kotokuzan (J10)
Hakuyozan (J9) beat Tomokaze (J13)
Ochiai (J14) beat Tsushimanada (J9)
Takakento (J13) beat Atamifuji (J8)
Daiamami (J6) beat Kitanowaka (J11)
Roga (J5) beat Shimanoumi (J11)
Churanoumi (J1) beat Oshoma (J4)
Chiyomaru (J4) beat Tokushoryu (J14)
Shonannoumi (J3) beat Hidenoumi (J8)
Shinazuumi (J7) beat Tochinoshin (J2)
Enho (J5) beat Chiyonokuni (J2)
Tohakuryu (J1) beat Gonoyama (J6)
Asanoyama (J1) beat Akua (J7)
Leader: Ichinojo (12-1)
Of note: It’s down to two. If Ichinojo wins tomorrow (Enho) and Asanoyama loses tomorrow (Shimazuumi), Ichinojo is the champion. One of them takes a second tier title with them back to the top tier in May.

Makushita:
Ryuo (Ms26) beat Kaizen (Ms50). RYUO MAKUSHITA YUSHO! It’s his first championship at any level in his 11-year career. This will vault him right to the top of Makushita as usually the champion moves up 30 spots in the rankings. Could that mean Shin Juryo? We’ll see but I’m leaning no. Kaizen was looking for his second straight championship after winning the Sandanme in January.

Sandanme:
Kiyonoumi (Sd80) beat Amakaze (Sd56)
Toshunryu (Sd25) beat Shosei (Sd35). PLAYOFF! That means with two at 7-0, Kiyonoumi vs. Toshunryu will happen as a playoff to determine the champion. AND it’s stablemate vs. stablemate! Both are from Tamanoi Beya and this is the only situation in which stablemates face each other in a tournament.

Jonidan:
Suguro (Jd60) beat Mishima (Jd40). SUGURO JONIDAN YUSHO! It’s his first championship and comes after he missed the last 3 tournaments, which dropped him from Makushita to Honidan. He should be back in the Sandanme in May.
Asahakuryu (Jk11) beat Takashoki (Jd87). ASAHAKURYU JONOKUCHI YUSHO! He wins the title in his Debut tournament.

Reminder: NHK World Japan will have 50 minutes of LIVE Day 14 top-tier coverage beginning tomorrow at 1:10 AM PT/4:10 AM ET. Tune in FOR FREE to see if Daieisho will win the Emperor’s Cup for the second time or if it goes to the Final Day!

UPDATE: Breaking…Sanyaju shakeup coming because Wakatakakage has WITHDRAWN going into Day 14. If he misses the Final Day that means he will be demoted from Sekiwake after over a year. More as it becomes available/. That means Kiribayama gets the free win and goes to 11-3.

Impact Wrestling “Sacrifice” Results (3/24/23)

Impact Wrestling runs their monthly PPV, Sacrifice, tonight and unfortunately it’s lived up to the name. In the last 12+ hours the event has been forced into major shakeups because Mickie James and Josh Alexander are both out due to injuries. It’s not known why James is out, Alexander is having surgery today to repair a torn triceps and because of that, the Impact World Championship is now VACANT. The two men Alexander was to have defended against over the next month, KUSHIDA and Steve Maclin, will now face each other at Rebellion in April for the vacant title. Maclin also replaces Alexander in a 6-man tag match tonight. James was to have defended the Impact Knockouts Championship against Jordynne Grace. More on the title’s future should be announced tonight. That has certainly put a damper on Impact’s return to Canada for most of the next month starting tonight.

Today’s event will be held at St. Clair College in Windsor, Ontario, Canada and can be watched LIVE on Impact+ (subscription required-$7.99/month or $71.99/year), YouTube (Ultimate Insider subscription required-$4.99/month) and FITE ($9.99). If you buy the FITE version you get the live broadcast and unlimited on demand replays. There will also be a FREE pre-show 30 minutes before the PPV begins on Impact+ and YouTube. Excluding the pre-show this will be a standard monthly PPV and should run the normal time of about 3 hours. Due to work conflicts I will be unable to watch the pre-show live and may be a few minutes behind the live feed with results, especially at the beginning.

Tonight’s current lineup (subject to change):

Pre-show (7:30 PM ET/4:30 PM PT. Results to be posted about 30 minutes after PPV)
KiLynn King vs. Rosemary

PPV:
Kenny King vs. PCO
Mike Bailey vs. Jonathan Gresham
Gisele Shaw vs. Deonna Purrazzo
Impact Digital Media Champion Joe Hendry vs. Brian Myers for the title
Impact Tag Team Champions Ace Austin & Chris Bey vs. Shane Haste & Mikey Nicholls for the titles
Impact X Division Champion Trey Miguel vs. Lince Dorado for the title
The future of the Knockouts Championship
Tommy Dreamer vs. Bully Ray in a Busted Open Match. First that bleeds loses
Steve Maclin, Rich Swann & Frankie Kazarian vs. Alex Shelley, Chris Sabin & KUSHIDA

8:15 PM ET UPDATE: (Near) Live updates begin now.

We are LIVE from St. Clair College in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Your hosts are Thom Hannifan & Matt Rehwoldt.

Pre-Show:
Match 1: Eddie Edwards vs. Bhupinder Gujjar
Result: Eddie Edwards beat Bhupinder Gujjar

Match 2: KiLynn King vs. Rosemary
Result: Rosemary beat KiLynn King. Jessicka attacked Taylor Wilde outside the ring to distract King, setting up the end.

PPV:
Match 1: Mike Bailey vs. Jonathan Gresham
Result: Mike Bailey beat Jonathan Gresham by submission

Match 2: Impact Digital Media Champion Joe Hendry vs. Brian Myers for the title. It was mentioned at the start that Moose was banned from ringside
Result: Impact Digital Media Champion Joe Hendry beat Brian Myers to retain the title.

Update regarding the Knockouts Championship…Mickie James has a broken rib. Out at least a week or two including Multiverse United but hopes to defend at Rebellion. Santino Marella says if Mickie can compete at Rebellion, there will be a 3-way between her, Grace and the 4-way winner next week for the title. If not, the title will be vacated and a new champion crowned in a single match between Grace and that winner.

Match 3: Gisele Shaw vs. Deonna Purrazzo
Result: Deonna Purrazzo beat Gisele Shaw by submission. Afterwards, Savannah Evans began to beat down Purrazzo but Tasha Steelz returned to make the save. She teased re-forming her former partnership with Evans but cheap-elbowed Evans from behind then laid out Jai Vidal when he tried to get involved.

Match 4: Kenny King vs. PCO
Result: PCO beat Kenny King

Match 5: Impact X Division Champion Trey Miguel vs. Lince Dorado for the title
Result: Impact X Division Champion Trey Miguel beat Lince Dorado to retain the title.

(As of 9:45 PM ET I have caught up to the live broadcast so it’s all real-time LIVE the rest of the way starting here)
Match 6: Impact Tag Team Champions Ace Austin & Chris Bey vs. Shane Haste & Bad Dude Tito for the titles (Impact’s website incorrectly said Mikey Nicholls & Haste)
Result: Impact Tag Team Champions Ace Austin & Chris Bey beat Shane Haste & Bad Dude Tito to retain the titles. Austin pinned Tito after THE FOLD.

Match 7: Bully Ray vs. Tommy Dreamer in a Busted Open Match. Whoever gets “Busted Open” and bleeds first loses
Result: Bully Ray beat Tommy Dreamer. Bully actually was busted open first but due to a ref bump it wasn’t seen, allowing The Good Hands to interfere to help Bully. At one point early in the match Bully sprayed beer in the face of NHL icon Darren McCarty, who is in the front row. McCarty hockey fought Bully and got the better of it before The Good Hands broke it up. They helped Bully put McCarty through a table. This brought out NEW President of Impact Wrestling Scott D’Amore. With Rhino, Joe Hendry, Heath, Jonathan Gresham & Mike Bailey! Bully & Hands bailed. But Jason Hotch tried to sneak attack D’Amore from behind and…D’AMORE WITH CANADIAN DESTROYER! HOLY SHIT!

Main Event: Steve Maclin, Rich Swann & Frankie Kazarian vs. Alex Shelley, Chris Sabin & KUSHIDA
Result: Alex Shelley, Chris Sabin & KUSHIDA beat Steve Maclin, Rich Swann & Frankie Kazarian. KUSHIDA beat Maclin with Hoverboard Lock.

This was an excellent from start to finish despite all the turmoil of the last 24 hours. With perhaps the exception of the Busted Open Match if you don’t care about it, everything is definitely worth watching.

Overall show grade (excluding pre-show): A-

End Show.

Sumo-March 2023 Grand Sumo Tournament Day 12 Results (3/23/23) (Top 2 Tiers)

Her are the quick results from today’s Day 12 of the March 23 Grand Sumo Tournament in Osaka:
Key: M-Maegashira, K-Komusubi, S-Sekiwake, J-Juryo, Ms-Makushita

Makuuchi (Top Tier):
Oho (M15) beat Asanoyama (J1)
Kinbozan (M14) beat Mitoryu (M17)
Takarafuji (M12) beat Hokuseiho (M15)
Azumaryu (M11) beat Tsurugisho (M16)
Takanosho (M11) beat Chiyoshoma (M16)
Myogiryu (M10) beat Kotoeko (M13)
Aoiyama (M9) beat Kagayaki (M12)
Daishoho (M13) beat Hiradoumi (M9)
Ichiyamamoto (M8) beat Bushozan (M14)
Nishikifuji (M10) beat Takayasu (M7)
Kotoshoho (M5) beat Ura (M8)
Abi (M2) beat MitakeumI (M3)
Sadanoumi (M6) beat Ryuden (M2)
Nishikigi (M3) beat Tamawashi (M1)
Daieisho (K) beat Hokutofuji (M7)
Kotonowaka (K) beat Meisei (M4)
Wakamotoharu (K) beat Endo (M6)
Shodai (M1) beat Tobizaru (K)
Wakatakakage (S) beat Midorifuji (M5)
Kiribayama (S) beat Hoshoryu (S)
Leader: Daieisho, Midorifuji (10-2)
Of note: UPSET ALERT! For the first time since his comeback last year, Asanoyama will finish a tournament with more than one loss as Oho pulled off the big upset and possibly handed the Juryo championship to Ichinojo. And Midorifuji may be letting the Emperor’s Cup slip away, he’s now lost 2 in a row since his 10-2 start and his 2 win lead is gone. Daieisho has now pulled even and may now be the favorite to win his second top tier title, but most of Sanyaku is now one back with Kiribayama, Kotonowaka & Wakamotoharu all at 9-3. Hoshoryu still has a very outside shot at Ozeki candidacy despite the loss today, but he has to win his last 3 matches. And congratulations to Kinbozan for clinching a promotion in his top-tier debut. Winning out or at least 2 more wins could get him a Special Prize.
Key matches tomorrow: Daieisho-Meisei, Midorifuji-Hoshoryu. On paper this heavily favors Daieisho but we’ll see what happens. Ichinojo will be the Juryo man tomorrow, up for the second time this tournament. He’ll get Bushozan.

Juryo:
Fujiseiun (Ms2) beat Tamashoho (J13)
Takakento (J12) beat Tochimusashi (J12)
Tomokaze (J13) beat Shimanoumi (J11)
Atamifuji (J8) beat Tokushoryu (J14)
Shimazuumi (J7) beat Kitanowaka (J11)
Gonoyama (J6) beat Ochiai (J14)
Roga (J5) beat Kotokuzan (J10)
Chiyomaru (J4) beat Churanoumi (J10)
Oshoma (J4) beat Tsushimanada (J9)
Ichinojo (J3) beat Hakuyozan (J9)
Enho (J5) beat Shonannoumi (J3)
Hidenoumi (J8) beat Chiyonokuni (J2)
Akua (J7) beat Tochinoshin (J2)
Tohakuryu (J1) beat Daiamami (J6)
Leader: Ichinojo (11-1)
Of note: Thanks to Asanoyama’s surprise top-tier loss, it’s now Ichinojo’s championship to lose. He’ll be back in the top tier tomorrow ahead of a now guaranteed return in May. As the Makushita man up today, Fujiseiun likely finished his tournament with a promotion-clinching win so he has a chance to reach Juryo in May for the first time. On the flip side, it looks like Ochiai has run out of gas as today was his 3rd straight loss since an 8-1 start. Gonoyama beating the newcomer gives the former Makushita champion an outside chance at the championship but he’s 2 back of Ichinojo with 3 days left. And Tochimusashi’s last-gasp bid to avoid demotion finally ended today with his 8th loss. He now needs to win out to stay in Juryo, but getting to 6 wins may be enough. But that’s 3 straight demotions since his Juryo debut championship last summer. Tokihayate will be the Makushita man tomorrow going for a promotion in his likely finale, but 4-3 at Makushita 3 probably isn’t enough to reach Juryo in May. Asanoyama draws Akua (7-5) tomorrow, who is always unpredictable outside of his epic salt-fist prematch pose for the camera.

Lower tier notes:
The Makushita Championship match is tomorrow (later today Japan time) on Day 13 with Ryuo vs. Kaizen for 7-0 and the title.
There is a chance the Sandanme will be decided as all 3 6-0 wrestlers are in action with two facing each other, but if Kiyonoumi-who is first up-wins his match that guarantees a playoff against the Shosei-Toshunryu winner. And if it’s Toshunryu vs. Kiyonoumi that’s a playoff between stablemates as both are from Tamanoi Beya. If Kiyonoumi loses, the Shosei-Toshunryu winner is the champion.
The Jonidan had 3 unbeaten coming in but as of this post Takashoki, who was first up, lost so that means the upcoming Suguro-Mishima match is for the championship.
In the Jonokuchi, because Asahakuryu was in the Jonidan today and just beat Takashoki, he is the champion as the only one who will finish 7-0. So…ASAHAKURYU JONOKUCHI YUSHO! The first official March 2023 Champion. He’ll be back Sunday for the closing awards ceremony.

Impact Wrestling 3/23/23 Results (Updated)

Here are the quick results from tonight’s TAPED Impact Wrestling from Las Vegas, NV:

The YouTube pre-show match was Impact X Division Champion Trey Miguel vs. Kevin Knight in a NON-TITLE match.

Match 1: Time Machine (Chris Sabin, Alex Shelley, KUSHIDA) beat Design (Deaner, Angels, Kon). KUSHIDA beat Angels with Hoverboard Lock.

Kenny King calls out PCO for Sacrifice.

Match 2: Deonna Purrazzo beat Savannah Evans. Evans & Gisele Shaw beat down Purrazzo afterwards.

Death Dollz argument culminates in Jessicka coming across a coffin with a hand reaching out to pull Taya Valkyrie inside. It closes as Jessicka runs away screaming. Guess this is Impact writing Taya off now that she’s signed with All Elite Wrestling and thus is probably done with Impact.

Match 3: Bully Ray & Masha Slamovich beat Tommy Dreamer & Mickie James. Bully pinned Dreamer after a piledriver. Afterwards Bully tried to powerbomb James through a table but Jordynne Grace made the save, however she inadvertently speared James when Bully dodged.

Rich Swann barges in on Steve Maclin going through Josh Alexander’s bags.

Match 4: Moose & Brian Myers beat Joe Hendry & Dirty Dango. Myers pinned Hendry after Roster Cut.

Main Event Segment: Josh Alexander comes out. He calls out Steve Maclin, who he defends the Impact World Championship against at Rebellion on 4/16. Maclin comes out and responds. Footage of Maclin observing Alexander from backstage at various events since mid-2022 is shown. Alexander wants to fight Maclin right then but Maclin refuses. He wants to win the title at Rebellion in Alexander’s hometown. But first Alexander must defend against KUSHIDA tomorrow.

Next week: The first-ever LIVE episode from Los Angeles (Anthem Studios at LA Live) leading into the Multiverse United PPV. Announced for that show: Miyu Yamashita vs. TBA, Will Ospreay vs. Homicide and Impact World Champion Josh Alexander vs. KENTA for the title. Those matches were taped already because Ospreay is injured and Alexander-KENTA already happened. Otherwise it will mainly be a preview for Multiverse United. PPV begins at 11 PM ET/8 PM PT only on FITE ($24.99).

Next up is Sacrifice tomorrow LIVE on Impact+ (subscription required, $7.99/month or $71.99/year), YouTube (Ultimate Insider subscription required, $4.99/month) and FITE ($9.99) at 8 PM ET/5 PM ET. A FREE pre-show is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET/4:30 PM PT on YouTube. & Impact+. NEAR LIVE results will be posted for the PPV portion (I will miss the pre-show due to work conflicts. Those results will be added after the PPV) but due to potential work conflicts I may be 10-15 minutes behind the action for the first hour or so. What should be 2 weeks of TV including fallout will be taped Saturday to take them from after next week to Rebellion on 4/16. Rebellion is their quarterly major PPV and will only be available live on cable/satellite providers and FITE ($39.99). Impact+ & Ultimate Inisders can watch on demand at a later date (I believe it’s 30 days but could be as much as 90 days).

UPDATE: After the show ended Impact announced on Twitter that Mickie James is now off Sacrifice. Unspecified injury. Further details announced at the event. She was to have defended the Impact Knockouts Championship against Jordynne Grace. It’s not known if this is legit or an angle (tonight’s show was taped nearly a month ago).
