New Japan News: New Women’s Champion in Stardom (Updated)

Stardom, the women’s promotion owned by New Japan owner Bushiroad Corporation, held what was billed as their biggest event ever today, and every one of the promotion’s titles changed hands. That included the IWGP Women’s Championship as Mayu Iwatani beat Mercedes Mone (the former Sasha Banks) to win the title. Iwatani becomes the third IWGP Women’s Champion.

This maybe wasn’t a terrible surprise because word was Mone’s limited dates contract with Bushiroad is now over (it ended today) and she’s a free agent again. So the question now is where does she go? She has been raving on social media about moving to Japan and enrolling in language school, but she could very well return to the US and go to All Elite Wrestling or even back to WWE. We shall see, but for now the title will stay in Japan and, for now, Stardom with hopefully defenses in New Japan again.

UPDATE: Mone has been announced for the 5/21 New Japan US event in Long Beach, CA. No word on her match yet.

In the 5/3 developing news, Kazuchika Okada has chosen Tomohiro Ishii has one of bis partners for the NEVER 6 Man Tag Team Title match. The other is TBD. I was thinking Hiroshi Tanahashi but his current injury has that being doubtful (Tanahashi suffered a broken rib Saturday and is out for this tour. New Japan News: Tanahashi Off Next Tour

New Japan just announced that, as probably expected, Hiroshi Tanahashi is off the Road to WRESTLING DONTAKU Tour starting tomorrow. Broken rib suffered Saturday at Capital Collision. No return date set. While not currently on the WRESTLING DONTAKU card, I’d call him doubtful given it’s in 2 weeks and questionable for the next US event on 5/21, when he is scheduled to face Will Ospreay.

More as it becomes available.

New Japan News: Will Ospreay Returning, But…

In Twitter posts today from both himself and England-based 1 Pro Wrestling (1PW), Will Ospreay announced he has been cleared to return to action after a shoulder injury that took him out of the New Japan Cup in March. He’ll return to action this weekend in 1PW against Bobby Fish. But…watch the below clip he posted on his Twitter:

Simply put, his prime may be past him and he knows that unfortunately time is running out on his career at only 33 with 11 years behind him. He is scheduled to return to New Japan on 5/21 in Long Beach, CA to face Hiroshi Tanahashi with the winner facing Lance Archer at DOMINION in June for a shot at IWGP US Champion Kenny Omega at a later date. But…that’s now tentative due to Tanahashi suffering a broken rib Saturday. Either way, let’s enjoy the Billy G.O.A.T. and United Empire while we can.
