DEVELOPING: AEW Star Suspended Again

Sammy Guevara is living the dream outside the ting right now, with a hot wife and beautiful new baby girl, but he may be living another nightmare in the AEW ring…there are reports he has been suspended by AEW for a second time. Reportedly breaking concussion protocols in the ring. This stems from his match against Jeff Hardy on the 2/16 Rampage when Guevara kneed Hardy in the head on the shooting star press that ended the match. Hardy was injured by the move, reportedly a broken nose but not a concussion but that’s never been officially confirmed. The suspension must have happened after that as he last competed on the 2/24 Collision.

He was first suspended in 2020 when comments he made about the former Sasha Banks on a 2016 podcast resurfaced and has had his share of backstage issues, most notably with Eddie Kingston and the now-departed Andrade El Idolo.

There were potentially late changes to the card because Naomichi Marufuji & Mohammed Yone were off the event. Michinoku Pro participation.

DDT 3/3/24 Results

DDT ran a standalone Toi Kojima hometown event today, as he took a break from his recent (and silly-sounding) name changes for one more event under his original/given name.

Today’s event was held at Naraha Sky Arena in Fukushima and is scheduled to be available on demand on WRESTLE UNIVERSE Thursday. There was no live broadcast.

The announced paid attendance was 820, a super full house/very near sellout.

There were several changes to the card because Yukio Naya, Rukiya and then, last-minute, Takeshi Masada were all pulled from the event in the hours before. Fever. DDT’s health & injury woes continue.

During opening ceremonies, Kojima joined in on a performance with a shovel shamisen (an odd take on the traditional Japanese string guitar-like instrument) and even took a good-natured chop from Naraha City Deputy Mayor Hideki Matsumoto, who was in attendance.

Match 1; Tetsuya Endo & Yuki Iino beat Kazuki Hirata & Tomomitsu Matsunaga. Iino pinned Hirata after a spear. Matsunaga was a late replacement for the absent wrestlers-he hardly appears in matches because he primarily works as a trainer for the promotion.

Match 2: Chris Brookes & Yuzutaro beat Sanshiro Takagi & Danshoku Dieno. Yuzutaro pinned Dieno after Yuzu Death Drop. Yuzutaro is/was some kind of giant headed mascot and this clearly was a comedy match. Another of the last-minute changes. Afterwards, with Yuzutaro victorious in its debut match, Brookes demanded a single match when they return in the future.

Match 3: Daisuke Sasaki & KANON beat Akito & Illusion. KANON pinned Illusion after Sleepy Hollow.

Match 4: HARASHIMA & Jun Akiyama beat Yuki Ueno & Takao Soma. HARASHIMA pinned Soma after Blue Sword.

Main Event: MAO, Shunma Katsumata & Toi Kojima beat Kazusada Higuchi, Makoto Oishi & Hideki Okatani. Kojima pinned Oishi after Kojima Impact. In an emotional post-match promo, Kojima vowed to return to compete in his home town again next year.

The next event is Wednesday at Shinjuku Face in Tokyo to kick off the March tour, Judgment 2024. Live streaming on WRESTLE UNIVERSE will begin at 2 AM PT/5 AM ET.

Dragon Gate Pro Wrestling 3/3/24 Results

CHAMPION GATE in Osaka, Dragon Gate’s early March standalone blowout event, is the second half of an Osaka weekend doubleheader for the promotion today. Named because usually it features all the promotion’s titles on the line, excluding a comedy title, but this time only 3 of 4 are being defended as the Open The Twin Gate Championship currently resides with Pro Wrestling NOAH. The title matches make up half the lineup and feature Open The Brave Gate Champion Hyo vs. Yasushi Kanda for the title, a match for the vacant Open The Triangle Gate Championship and, in the main event, Open The Dream Gate Champion Luis Mante vs. Susumu Mochizuki for the title.

There was a late change to the lineup because, after missing yesterday because of it, Strong Machine J remains out today due to a shoulder injury.

Today’s event will be held at Osaka Prefectural Gym 2 in Osaka and can be watched LIVE on DRAGONGATE NETWORK in English. There will also be a no commentary version as there’s no Japanese or wrestler commentary version scheduled (assumed on Japanese because for yesterday there was no commentary aside from the separate English version). With only 6 matches, even though 3 are title matches, and factoring in yesterday’s event going just under 3 hours I’m anticipating today will go about 3 hours. There probably will be an intermission at the halfway point but this is not confirmed. (Last-second Update: You can also watch the first match FOR FREE on YouTube)

Today’s lineup:
Masaaki Mochizuki, Don Fujii & Ryu Fuda vs. Kota Minoura, Ben-K & BxB Hulk
Takashi Yoshida vs. Gianni Valetta
YAMATO, Dragon Kid, Naruki Doi, Shachihoko BOY & Ho Ho Lun vs. Kzy, U-T, BIGBOSS Shimizu, Jason Lee & JACKY “FUNKY” KAMEI
Open The Brave Gate Champion Hyo vs. Yasushi Kanda for the title
Shun Skywalker, KAI & ISHIN vs. Madoka Kikuta, Dragon Dia & Ryoya Tanaka for the Open The Triangle Gate Championship
Open The Dream Gate Champion Luis Mante vs. Susumu Mochizuki for the title

Updates below will begin at 9:45 PM PT/12:45 AM ET. The event is scheduled to begin at 10 PM PT/1 AM ET.

9:40 PM PT UPDATE: The live stream has begun. We should be going to the venue in a few minutes.

9:45 PM PT UPDATE: Live updates begin now…

We are LIVE from Osaka Prefectural Gym 2 in Osaka, Japan. There is no commentary on the non-English version.

The paid attendance will be announced sometime later today. Yesterday’s event did an announced 1028, which was a sellout and one of the best numbers for the venue in some time, which has been doing reduced capacity since the pandemic started (I think it’s legit full capacity is in the 1300-1500 range) and the crowd is still filing in, so hopefully they’ll match that today so my prediction will be around 1000. (UPDATE: The announced paid attendance was 1102, a legit sellout. Some people apparently left during intermission as there was a front row notably empty for the last 2 matches)

The matches should begin in about 15 minutes. Opening announcements begin at 9:55 PM PT.

The matches begin at 10:08 PM PT/1:08 AM ET.

Match 1: Masaaki Mochizuki, Don Fujii & Ryu Fuda vs. Kota Minoura, Ben-K & BxB Hulk. 15 minute time limit
Result: Kota Minoura, Ben-K & BxB Hulk beat Masaki Mochizuki, Don Fujii & Ryu Fuda. Ben-K pinned Fuda after a spear. This match was Fuda’s return from an extended absence due to injury.

Match 2: Takashi Yoshida vs. Gianni Valetta. 20 minute time limit
Result: Gianni Valetta beat Takashi Yoshida. Fun hoss fight for 7+ minutes plus Valetta’s usual pre and post-match rampage carnage.

Natural Vibes out before their match for their pre-match dance routine and promo.

Match 3: YAMATO, Dragon Kid, Naruki Doi (Independent/Freelancer), Shachihoko BOY & Ho Ho Lun vs. Kzy, U-T, BIGBOSS Shimizu, Jason Lee & JACKY “FUNKY” KAMEI. 30 minute time limit
Right before the start there was a comedy spot as a fan’s cell phone went off. Not set to silent, hahaha!
Result: YAMATO, Dragon Kid, Naruki Doi, Shachihoko BOY & Ho Ho Lun vs. Kzy, U-T, BIGBOSS Shimizu, Jason Lee & JACKY “FUNKY” KAMEI. Kid pinned KAMEI.

Match 4: Open The Brave Gate Champion Hyo vs. Yasushi Kanda for the title. 1 Hour time limit
Result: Open The Brave Gate Champion Hyo beat Yasushi Kanda to retain the title. V5 for Hyo.

Intermission. Updates will resume in about 15 minutes (as of 11:26 PM PT).

The matches resume at 11:37 PM PT.

Match 5: Shun Skywalker, KAI & ISHIN vs. Madoka Kikuta, Dragon Dia & Ryoya Tanaka for the Open The Triangle Gate Championship. 1 Hour time limit
Result: Shun Skywalker, KAI & ISHIN beat Madoka Kikuta, Dragon Dia & Ryoya Tanaka to win the vacant Open The Triangle Gate Championship. Skywalker, KAI & ISHIN become the 89th Open The Triangle Gate Champions. ISHIN pinned Tanaka.

Main Event: Open The Dream Gate Champion Luis Mante vs. Susumu Mochizuki for the title. 1 Hour time limit
Result: Open The Dream Gate Champion Luis Mante beat Susumu Mochizuki to retain the title. V2 for Mante. Afterwards, Hyo joined Mante in the ring for the post-match victory promo to end the show.

The next event is Tuesday at Yokohama Radiant Hall in Yokohama to wrap up the Truth Gate 2024 Tour. There will be no live or on demand broadcast.

Sumo-Major Stable Closing In April

Nikkan Sports reports a sumo story that will have some major implications for wrestlers-MIchinoku Beya (stable/room), currently boasting Ozeki and Yokozuna candidate Kirishima, will be closing in April and will cease to exist after roughly 50 years. The closing is because the current stablemaster Michinoku (former Ozeki Kirishima, not the current one) turns 65 on April 2, which means per Japan Sumo Association rules he must retire (65 is the mandatory retirement age in sumo), and there is no successor to inherit the stable. The current Kirishima will at least temporarily transfer to Otowoyama Beya, the new stable run by former Yokozuna Kakuryu, who left Michinoku last year to form his own stable, but later on he and perhaps other MIchinoku wrestlers could transfer to Tokitsukaze Beya, but those plans will be determined after the March tournament. Michinoku currently has 8 wrestlers, with Kirishima the only one ranked above the Sandanme division, and also one Yobidashi (staff/usher/announcer) for Makushita division.
Tokitsukaze, for those who may go there, currently has 17 rikishi with the highest ranked being Shodai at Maegashira 10 (formerly Ozeki) and Tokihayate at Juryo 1. The current stablemaster is 38 and reached a highest rank of Maegashira 1.
Otowayama stable, run by Kakuryu, currently has 3 rikishi, one in the Sandanme and a second in Jonokuchi. A third rikishi is either unranked or has yet to make his pro debut.
Said transfers will not happen until after the March Tournament.

This will also affect the Association’s corporate ranks as Michinoku, real name Kazumi Yoshinaga, is a director. It also could open up elder stock, allowing an eligible retired rikishi to remain in the Association as an Oyakata, starting out as an usher and working up the ranks to coach and maybe eventually a stablemaster, also serving as a judge during tournaments.

Tokyo Joshi Pro 3/3/24 Results

Tokyo Joshi Pro kicks off their spring house show tour today with a morning matinee event in Tokyo as they begin the final push to GRAND PRINCESS ’24, their biggest event of the year, now just 4 weeks away. It’s an exciting day for the promotion as the remaining two wrestlers from their recent 3-woman trainee group will make their debuts today, just days after Chika Nanase was the first to begin her pro career. First up is Uta Takami, who has been part of Up Up Girls and performing with the group since making her pre-training debut last year and seen much more this year with the extended absence of Hikari Noa. With her 17th birthday coming up later this month, she’ll be in good company for her debut as she will team with Miu Watanabe to face Raku & Shino Suzuki in an Up Up Girls showcase match. The other trainee, Kira Summer, then will make her debut as the Australia native will team with Nao Kakuta to face fellow new rookie Chika Nanase & Arisu Endo.

Today’s event will be held at Shinjuku Face in Tokyo and can be watched LIVE on WRESTLE UNIVERSE. There will be no commentary. There are 7 matches on the lineup but none will probably have more than a 20 minute time limit, and the early start time means west coasters can watch and still go out and about on their Saturday nights as this event probably won’t run longer than 2 hours.

The paid attendance will be announced after the event. The cheaper seats that were still available today look about half full right now (all the lower level and more expensive seats are sold out) so we’ll see what the walk-up crowd looks like. I’ll predict around 325. (UPDATE: The announced paid attendance was 370, a super full house/very near sellout)

Opening announcements begin as soon as we go live as there’s a lot on top. The matches should begin in 15-20 minutes. More on these later, but among the announcements for GRAND PRINCESS ’24 participation was…she’s back for one more event…Yuka Sakazaki! (MId-show Update: It was also announced that Runa Okubo has passed her high school entrance exams, and with that out of the way her current hiatus is over and she will return on 3/16.
