Stardom 4/12/24 Results

Stardon returned to Japan today for the post-mass exodus finale where they would say goodbye to Giulia & Utami Hayashishita, who have now left the promotion.

Today’s event was held at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo and can be watched on demand as a PPV via Pia Stream for 2200 Japanese Yen (around $16) through this weekend. It should be available on demand on Stardom World Monday or Tuesday (the PPV window ends Monday morning).

The announced paid attendance was 1390, a full house/near sellout.

Impromptu Match: Utami Hayashishita vs. Saya Kamitani went to a 5 minute time limit draw.

The next event is tomorrow at Kira Messe Numazu in Shizuoka. It will be available on demand on Stardom World at a later date.

Unrelated side note: The 4/4 US PPV is now available on demand on Stardom World for subscribers. It has Japanese commentary and is broken down into individual match videos, but some wrestler entrance themes (like Ram Kaichow’s) are muted. You can still buy it on Triller/FITE for $24.99, which has English commentary with Veda Scott and (when/if you can clearly hear him, which isn’t until late in the event) Tom Lawlor and you get unlimited replays indefinitely (probably forever).

Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling 4/13/24 Results (Updated)

Tokyo Joshi Pro is back in Japan after another very successful WrestleMania week excursion to the US and resumes their spring house show tour with an event in Tokyo today, which will be the farewell event for Juria Nagano, who is leaving the promotion and pro wrestling after today’s event. Nagano did not say she is retiring so the door may remain open in the future, but at least for now she is going to be done. Maintaining a part-time schedule, she showed flashes of potential but unfortunately she missed a majority of the last 2 years due to injuries. She also is active as an actress and with other interests so there isn’t much time for wrestling. She will have 2 final matches today, first a trios match then her finale will be a single match against regular partner Moka Miyamoto.

There have been late changes to the event card because Hyper Misao is now off due to injury. Fractured right ankle. She was to have faced Yuki Kamifuku & Uta Takami in a 3-way. It’s now a single match. Also, for those unaware, Miyu Yamashita stayed in the US for another extended excursion and is not expected to return to Japan until mid-June. Maki Itoh also remains in the US for now.

Today’s event will be held at Kitazawa Town Hall in Tokyo and can be watched LIVE on WRESTLE UNIVERSE. There will be no commentary. The event is a legit advance sellout. Even with anything they may do as a send-off for Nagano this is otherwise a standard house show and should have a running time of around 2 hours.
There is a chance results at the start will be slightly delayed if the New Japan “Windy City Riot” PPV runs long. It starts 3 1/2 hours before this event and it could go 4+ hours.

Today’s lineup:
Yuki Kamifuku vs. Uta Takami
Mizuki & Nao Kakuta vs. Runa Okubo & Haru Kazashiro
Rika Tatsumi, Raku & Chika Nanase vs. Mahiro Kiryu, Toga & Kira Summer
Miu Watanabe, Suzume & Arisu Endo vs. Shoko Nakajima, Wakana Uehara & HIMAWARI
Juria Nagano, Moka Miyamoto & Kaya Toribami vs. Yuki Aino, Pom Harajuku & Shino Suzuki
Juria Nagano vs. Moka Miyamoto

Updates below will begin at 8:30 PM PT/11:30 PM ET.

8:31 PM PT UPDATE: Live updates begin now.

We are LIVE from Kitazawa Town Hall in Tokyo, Japan. There is no commentary.

The paid attendance will be announced after the event. It’s a legit advance sellout so the number will depend on the setup-the venue’s listed full capacity is 294 but it looks like it’ll be closer to 200. (UPDATE: The announced paid attendance was 294, so it was full capacity)

The matches will begin shortly. Looks like it’s a high-up hard camera only view.

During the opening announcements, Hyper Misao is brought out. She’s on crutches and with a cast/boot on her injured foot. Safe to say she won’t be able to compete at her produced event coming up in just over 2 weeks here. Also, compared to normal the video quality for the stream is not as good as usual. Seems like SD at best where usually the highest quality is HD.

The matches begin at 8:46 PM PT/11:46 PM ET.

Match 1: Juria Nagano, Moka Miyamoto & Kaya Toribami vs. Yuki Aino, Pom Harajuku & Shino Suzuki. 20 minute time limit
Result: Juria Nagano, Moka Miyamoto & Kaya Toribami beat Yuki Aino, Pom Harajuku & Shino Suzuki. Nagano pinned Suzuki after a spinning right head kick. Now on to her final match, which will be the main event.

Match 2: Yuki Kamifuku vs. Uta Takami. 15 minute time limit
Result: Yuki Kamifuku beat Uta Takami

Match 3: Rika Tatsumi, Raku & Chika Nanase vs. Mahiro Kiryu, Toga & Kira Summer. 20 minute time limit
Result: Rika Tatsumi, Raku & Chika Nanase beat Mahiro Kiryu, Toga & Kira Summer. Tatsumi beat Summer with a dragon sleeper.

Match 4: Mizuki & Nao Kakuta vs. Runa Okubo & Haru Kazashiro. 20 minute time limit
Result: Mizuki & Nao Kakuta beat Runa Okubo & Haru Kazashiro. Mizuki pinned Kazashiro with Cutie Special.

Quick break for ring maintenance.

Match 5: Miu Watanabe, Suzume & Arisu Endo vs. Shoko Nakajima, Wakana Uehara & HIMAWARI. 20 minute time limit
Result: Shoko Nakajima, Wakana Uehara & HIMWARI beat Miu Watanabe, Suzume & Arisu Endo. Nakajima pinned Watanabe with a rollup. And there it is…as expected, Nakajima with microphone post-match. Challenge issued. Looks like we’ve got our 5/6 main event. Watanabe’s first Princess Of Princess Championship defense appears set. Then HIMAWARI with microphone. Princess Tag Team Championship challenge issued for herself & Uehara to Suzume & Endo. Uehara with microphone. She’s in too. Endo & Suzume accept. That’s two. Now one burning question left-who will International Princess Champion Yuki Arai presumably defend against on 5/6? (5/6 is YES! WONDERLAND, their annual Golden Week blowout event at Korakuen Hall)

Main Event: Juria Nagano Final Match: Juria Nagano vs. Moka Miyamoto. No time limit
Result: Moka Miyamoto beat Juria Nagano. They went just a few moments over 10 minutes.
Afterwards, Miyamoto with microphone. Time for an emotional farewell to her rival and partner, who she formed a solid team with and Nagano definitely made Miyamoto a better wrestler. It’s sad that Nagano’s injury history the last couple years cost her so much time, they could have been Princess Tag Team Champions had they reached their full potential. After Miyamoto finished, Suzume & Arisu Endo came out to present Nagano with a special photo book followed by Yuki Aino with the traditional flowers. Nagano with microphone to thank the fans and deliver her final farewell. For now at least since she never said this was retirement. Hopefully she will be back someday, she definitely has potential as a Miyu Yamashita-type fighter & striker and made such a good team with Miyamoto. I wish her all the best in her future endeavors. Sayuri Namba then made the final call to end the show as the roster came out to join Nagano for the customary final group photo in the ring followed by lots of hugs & well-wishes from everyone, and fittingly Miyamoto was the last one before Nagano said one last goodbye.

The next event is “Gaisen Sakura Pro Wrestling” tomorrow at Shinjo Village in Okayama, part of a special doubleheader with Pro Wrestling BASARA. The location is subject to change depending on weather as it is scheduled to be outdoors. There will be no live broadcast.

UPDATE: It’s now official. Both title matches are set for 5/6.

New Japan Pro Wrestling “Windy City Riot” Results (4/12/24)

New Japan is back in the US today for this year’s Windy City Riot event, billed as the promotion’s biggest US event this decade, and possibly ever. From a box office standpoint it will be their biggest US event ever based on ticket sales. It’s a loaded event on paper with 4 title matches among 11 total, getting bigger after SAKURA GENESIS last weekend-with Tetsuya Naito vs. Jon Moxley already set for today, after Naito retained the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship Sunday Moxley made the challenge and this match became for the title. Also on tap is a NJPW WORLD TV Championship match as Zack Sabre Jr. tries to become a 2-time champion against Matt Riddle, STRONG Tag Team Champions El Phantasmo & Hikuleo defend in a 4-way, and NEW STRONG Women’s CHampion Stephanie Vaquer defends for the first time against AZM, who will try to bring the belt back to Stardom.

Today’s event will be held at Wintrust Arena in Chicago and can be watched LIVE ONLY ON NEW JAPAN WORLD OUTSIDE JAPAN as a PPV in English for $19.99. A paid monthly NJPW WORLD subscription is not required to buy the PPV. No Triller/FITE or any other option. Purchase includes the live stream and unlimited on demand replays until 6/30, but that date is subject to change (after that it should be available for all paying subscribers with no paywall). In Japan the event will be a live broadcast only on TV Asahi. There will be a FREE 30 minute pre-show on New Japan World and YouTube before the event with 2 matches scheduled. There’s one match with what appears to be no time limit but based on the number of matches, including the pre-show I anticipate the event will have a total running time of at least 3 1/2 hours, close to 4 hours.

Today’s lineup (in order):
Pre-show:
Matt Vandagriff vs. Zane Jay
Viva Van & Mina Shirakawa vs. Trish Adora & Alex Windsor

PPV:
Minoru Suzuki vs. Ren Narita
STRONG Women’s Champion Stephanie Vaquer vs. AZM for the title

4 PM PT UPDATE: If you purchased the PPV on New Japan World, the stream is now live in pre-show mode and will begin with the pre-show. If you want to buy the PPV, you must do so on a web browser-you cannot buy the PPV on the mobile/TV app.

4:30 PM PT UPDATE: Live updates begin now.

We are LIVE from Wintrust Arena in Chicago, IL. Your hosts are Walker Stewart, Veda Scott & Chris Charlton.

The paid attendance will be announced after the event. Based on the last fan estimate via Ticketmaster that I saw yesterday, it should be in the 6200-6500 range. A sellout at the current capacity would be about 6700. Regardless, it’s going to be a new record for NJPW in the US and then some. (UPDATE: The announced paid attendance was 6028. That’s actually a little less than what was expected)

Pre-show:
Match 1: Matt Vandagriff vs. Zane Jay. 20 minute time limit
Result: Matt Vandagriff beat Zane Jay
Match 2: Viva Van & Mina Shirakawa vs. Trish Adora & Alex Windsor (Mrs. Will Ospreay btw). 20 minute time limit
Result: Trish Adora & Alex Windsor beat Viva Van & Mina Shirakawa. Windsor pinned Van.

Updates will resume when the PPV begins. Pre-show ends at 4:54 PM PT/7:54 PM ET.

PPV:
This event is airing live in Japan as part of WORLD PRO WRESTLING LIVE 2024 on TV Asahi. Clearly we’re getting their feed because they open with said graphic, we just have the English commentary being outside Japan.

Match 1: Minoru Suzuki vs. Ren Narita. 30 minute time limit
Result: Ren Narita beat Minoru Suzuki

Match 2: STRONG Women’s Champion Stephanie Vaquer vs. AZM for the title. 30 minute time limit
Result: STRONG Women’s Champion Stephanie Vaquer beat AZM to retain the title. V1 for Vaquer. Next up: Possibly Alex Windsor. With microphone. Challenge issued for 5/11 in Ontario, CA at Resurgence. Accepted by Vaquer.

Match 3: STRONG Tag Team Champions El Phantasmo & Hikuleo vs. Shane Haste & Mikey Nicholls, Jorel Nelson & Royce Isaacs and Fred Rosser & Tom Lawlor in a 4-way for the titles. 30 minute time limit
Result: Shane Haste & Mikey Nicholls beat STRONG Tag Team Champions El Phantasmo & Hikuleo, Jorel Nelson & Royce Isaacs and Fred Rosser & Ton Lawlor in a 4-way, when Haste pinned Nelson, to win the titles. Haste & Nicholls become the 7th STRONG Tag Team Champions.

Match 4: Shota Umino vs. Jack Perry. 30 minute time limit
Result: Shota Umino beat Jack Perry

Match 5: Mustafa Ali vs. Hiromu Takahashi. 30 minute time limit
Result: Mustafa Ali beat Hiromu Takahashi

Match 6: Eddie Kingston, TBA, TBA & TBA vs. Gabriel Kidd, TBA, TBA & TBA in a Riot Rules Tornado Tag Match. No DQs. Members revealed at entrance time. Kidd’s 3 TBAs are Clark Connors, David Finlay and KENTA. Kingston’s TBAs are TJP, Jeff Cobb and Homicide. No time limit
Result: Gabriel Kidd, Clark Connors, David Finlay & KENTA beat Eddie Kingston, Jeff Cobb, TJP & Homicide. Kidd pinned Homicide after a piledriver. Both sides kept fighting after the match until refs finally separated them all. Once things settled down, Kingston with microphone. With some choice English, he challenged Kidd to a No Rope Last Standing Match at Resurgence. And commentary notes it will also be for the STRONG Openweight Championship held by Kingston.

Quick break for ring clearning/repairs.

Match 7: NJPW WORLD TV Champion Matt Riddle vs. Zack Sabre Jr. for the title. 15 minute time limit
Result: Zack Sabre Jr. beat NJPW WORLD TV Champion Matt Riddle to win the title. Sabre becomes the 4th NJPW WORLD TV Champion. And first 2-time champion as he was the inaugural champion. Can he make it to V17 and break his own record this time? Sabre with microphone post-match for some brief comments, including saying he’ll defend the title very soon in the US. But before he can leave, Jeff Cobb comes out. Challenge issued and accepted, but Cobb goes for the cheap shot out of the handshake. They trade counters and Sabre bails. Sabre with microphone asking for the belt back in exchange for the title shot.

Upcoming live US PPV announcement-Capital Collision on 8/30 at Entertainment & Sports Arena in Washingon, DC.

Match 8: IWGP Global Champion Nic Nemeth vs. Tomohiro Ishii in a NON-TITLE match. 30 minute time limit
Result: Nic Memeth beat Tomohiro Ishii

Main Event: IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Tetsuya Naito vs. Jon Moxley for the title. 1 Hour time limit
Result: Jon Moxley beat IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Tetsuya Naito to win the title. Moxley becomes the 9th IWGP World Heavyweight Champion. HOLY S**T! HOLY S**T! UPSET ALERT!!! I never thought this is how Naito’s first title reign (and perhaps last) would end! After only 3 months. Next/first up: TBA but it’s all but guaranteed to be at Resurgence. Afterwards, Moxley with microphone. He basically threw down the gauntlet for any and all challengers in New Japan and announced up first is…Shota Umino. But instead, Ren Narita came out and ambushed Moxley from behind. Narita with microphone. While choking out Moxley, Narita said he’s next and continued the beatdown until Umino made the save. As Narita walked off, Moxley grabbed the microphone and delivered the death threat.

To put it simply, this event absolutely lived up to the hype from beginning to end. And after the disaster that was the stream last year, this year’s broadcast was perfect, maybe helped by it being on TV in Japan (I watched on a Roku device and had zero issues). If you missed it live it’s definitely a must-buy replay.

End Show.

The next event is WRESTLING WORLD 2024 IN TAIWAN Sunday at New Zepp Taaipei in Taipei, Taiwan. Live streaming on New Japan World OUTSIDE JAPAN ONLY will begin at 2 AM PT/5 AM ET. This will be a TV Asahi live broadcast in Japan.

Injury Report: I Am A Wounded Hero

The injury bug strikes Japan again, this time Tokyo Joshi Pro and, in particularly bad timing for their hero, it’s gotten Hyper Misao. Fractured right ankle. Out indefinitely. This also means a planned return to the US on 4/27 is now off. For Saturday’s event she was to have faced Yuki Kamifuku & Uta Takami in a 3-way. It’s now a single match. On Sunday she was to have teamed with Rika Tatsumi to face Arisu Endo & Mahiro Kiryu. Nao Kakuta is the replacement, meaning a 3-way of Mizuki vs. Kakuta & Pom Harajuku in a 3-way is now Mizuki vs. Harajuku.

More as it becomes available.

BREAKING: Former Japanese Wrestler & Yokozuna Akebono Dies

Very sad news out of Japan via the official Twitter accounts of New Japan’s Yuji Nagata and also Nikkan Sports: Akebono Taro, the former Yokozuna Akebono who went on to a successful pro wrestling career after retiring from sumo and becoming a Japanese citizen, has died. He was 54. He had been battling heart disease for the last 7 years.

Originally born Chad Rowan in Hawaii, Akebono became a sumo wrestler in Japan in 1983, reaching the highest rank of Yokozuna (grand champion) in 1990 and competed in sumo until 2003, when he transitioned into kickboxing and later into pro wrestling. In wrestling, he primarily competed in All-Japan Pro Wrestling and is a former Triple Crown Champion. After retiring from sumo, he obtained Japanese citizenship and changed his legal name to Akebono Taro in order to continue living in Japan, first trying his hand at kickboxing in K-1 before transitioning to pro wrestling and become a major attraction and champion for another decade.

We pray for the peace of Akebono’s soul in the other world and send deepest condolences to his family, friends and fans. RIP, GOD BLESS and E Ho’omaha I Ka Maluhia.

AEW Dynamite 4/10/24 Results

Here are the quick results from tonight’s AEW Dynamite in Charleston, WV:

Match 1: AEW World Champion Samoa Joe vs. Dustin Rhodes in a NON-TITLE match
Result: Never happened. Swerve Strickland ambushed Joe as he came out first. No word on if match will still happen tonight.

Match 2: AEW TNT Champion Adam Copeland vs. Penta El Zero M for the title
Result: AEW TNT Champion Adam Copeland beat Penta El Zero M to retain the title.

The Young Bucks talk All In London and show the backstage footage. Quick clip and a massive letdown. Mostly shots at FTR. Afterwards, FTR immediately storm out to the ring to respond. Ultimately this came off as little more than an EPIC FAIL of a Dynasty promo.

Will Ospreay promo.

Julia Hart promo. Excellent video.

Match 3: Hook, Chris Jericho & Katsuyori Shibata vs. Shane Taylor Promotions
Result: Shane Taylor Promotions beat Hook, Chris Jericho & Katsuyori Shibata. Lee Moriarty pinned Shibata after Fang. Shane Taylor interference set it up while Jericho & Hook argued outside the ring.

Joe-Rhodes is still on for tonight per onscreen graphics before commercial in the prior match.

Match 4: Kazuchika Okada vs. TBA. TBA is Cristiano Argento
Result: Kazuchika Okada beat Cristiano Argento. Squash. Afterwards, Okada accepted Pac’s challenge for the AEW Continental Championship at Dynasty. Pac came out but The Bucks followed for a beatdown until FTR made the save, but Okada came back with a chair to punctuate the heel beatdown.

Match 5: Mariah May vs. Anna Jay
Result: Mariah May beat Anna Jay. Anna choked out Mariah with Queenslayer afterwards until Mina Shirakawa from Stardom ran out to make the save, then celebrate with Champagne and a little HLA with May.

Mercedes Mone interview. But when asked who she would rather face for the AEW TBS Championship between Julia Hart & Willow Nightingale, the lights go out and we hear the beatdown on Mone.

Main Event: AEW World Champion Samoa Joe vs. Dustin Rhodes in a NON-TITLE match. Take 2
Result: Samoa Joe beat Dustin Rhodes

I learned about the death of former All-Japan Triple Crown Champion and Yokozuna in sumo Akebono in the second hour and that further depleted the wind from my already-depleted sails, but this show was a bad dumpster fire. Even some Japanese hotties HLA couldn’t save it. As WWE now seems poised to begin a shift away from sports entertainment AEW is poised to take the mantle, which is a big mistake waiting to happen. If you missed the live show, skip the replay.

Friday on Rampage: Angelo Parker vs. Zak Knight, Orange Cassidy vs. Alex Reynolds and AEW TBS Champion Julia Hart vs. Leyla Hirsch for the title.

Saturday on Collision: Toni Storm vs. AZM (Stardom) and Bryan Danielson & Claudio Castagnoli vs. Powerhouse Hobbs & Kyle Fletcher.
On BOTB 10: FTW Champion Hook vs. Shane Taylor for the title.
