Sumo-July Tournament Final Pre-Tournament Notes (Updated)

With the July Grand Sumo Tournament starting tomorrow, the first 2 days’ matches for the top 2 tiers have been announced, as well as the early injury withdrawals. There was a major one in the top tier-Ozeki Takakeisho is OUT. Meniscus/knees. Out 3 weeks. That means he’ll be back in kadoban status in September where he’ll need 8+ wins again to avoid demotion. As expected, Wakatakakage is also out due to injury (still out anywhere from 2-8 more months) so he’ll be demoted from Maegashira 12 out of the top tier. Fujiseiun, at Juryo 6, has also withdrawn (unknown). If he misses the whole tournament odds are he’ll be demoted back to Makushita.

The first day matchups are as traditional, generally against the current or next rank up, so Hakuoho (former Ochiai) makes his top tier against Aoiyama, fighting to stay in the top tier at Margashira 17, while May Juryo Champion Gonoyama devuts against Kotoshoho. At Maegashira 4 Asonoyama will first face Maegashira 3 Meisei. New Ozeki Kirishima (former Kiribayama) starts with Nishikigi (Maegashira 1) while Yokozuna Terunofuji first gets Abi, who is back at Komusubi.

With Fujiseiun out of Juryo at the start, Tokihayate moves up as the Makushita man on Day 1, he will face Chiyonoumi. At Makushita 1 Tokihayate can get back to Juryo with 4+ wins, he was demoted after a 6-9 Juryo debut effort in May.

UPDATE: The rest of the pre-tournament withdrawals from the lower tiers have been announced. Notable Makushita withdrawals include Enho & Chiyonokuni, both demoted from Juryo and not coming back up in September.

Kenny King & Sheldon Jean get constantly mobbed by fans until one triggers a Joe Hendry appearance. In a humorous spot, Hendry makes Yuya Uemura appear in his style at the end.

Regarding Potential All-Japan News/Results Delays (7/6/23)

Due to All-Japan’s official website possibly being down or temporarily restricted, there may be delays in posting news and results from events (namely the 7/8 event) until this issue is resolved. The site was very broken last weekend with many links not properly working, and accessing the site (at least outside Japan) gives a Forbidden error message. The AJPW.TV service does not appear to be affected and that site is currently available as normal, as are All-Japan’s Japanese and English Twitter accounts.

Updates will follow. Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.

Injury Report: Not A Super Strong Machine

He may be the biological son of 1980s-1990s New Japan wrestler Super Strong Machine, but apparently Dragon Gate wrestler Strong Machine J was not strong enough to avoid injury at the major Kobe event Sunday. He saved his mask but at a physical price. Left shoulder injury. Out indefinitely and is questionable for KING OF GATE-his first match is scheduled for 7/14 against Yasushi Kanda. If he can’t go Kanda probably will get a forfeit win. (Also already out is Diamante but that was per his request so Susumu Mochizuki gets a forfeit win on 7/7. Diamante lost his mask on that same 7/2 match)

More as it becomes available.

TJPW News: Yet Another 7/8 Change

Tokyo Joshi Pro has made yet another change to this weekend’s SUMMER SUN PRINCESS ’23 card, but again it’s for an existing match and not a bad change-at the request of Miyu Yamashita, who just returned from a successful title defense in England, her match against Sawyer Wreck will now be for the Pro Wrestling EVE Championship under Spirit Of EVE rules. That means 30 minute time limit, no countouts and not displaying enough fighting spirit in the referee’s view results in being DQ’d. This will be the 7th defense of the title for Yamashita. It makes a total of 4 title matches on the event between TJPW and other titles. (And for those wondering, still no word on when the vacant Princess Tag Team Championship situation will be resolved)
