Wakamotoharu (M2) beat Takakeisho (O)
Terunofuji (Y) beat Tobizaru (M4)
Leader: Terunofuji (6-0)
Of note: There may still be 9 days left, but it could already be over at the top. Terunofuji is now 2 clear of the field and continues to look like his old self, meaning he either wins the championship or withdraws at some point. So it stays healthy, Emperor’s Cup #10 is looking like reality here. Elsewhere, Chiyoshoma made his tournament debut today after missing 5 days due to hernia surgery, his lower back was taped (mostly covered up by his mawashi) but he looked good and hopefully can finish the tournament.
Tomorrow Terunofuji looks for 7-0 and to keep his lead at 2 against Ura.

Juryo:
Hakuyozan (J12) beat Nabatame (J14)
Fujiseiun (J14) beat Aoiyama (J11)
Shishi (J10) beat Kayo (J13)
SHimazuumi (J10) beat Hakuoho (J13)

Tokihayate (J1) beat Asakoryu (J4)
Onokatsu (J1) beat Daishoho (J4)
Leader: Onokatsu, Shirokuma, Tsurugisho, Shishi (5-1)

Lower tier notes: Tomorrow starts “Promotion Day” in the lower tiers as wrestlers who are co-leaders and win will be 4-0 and earn the first promotions of the tournament. In the Makushita, that means Daiseizan, currently at Mx2, could earn promotion to Juryo with a win. He’s among 16 who are 3-0 including Kazuma, a rookie making his career debut from Ms60. Further down the chart is fan favorite Enho, back in action after missing more than a year due to injury. He is 2-1 in Jonokuchi as he tries to get back up to Juryo one more time in order to qualify for elder stock upon retirement (he has 29 of the 30 tournaments required in the top 2 tiers, although he could petition for elder stock anyway being so close. Not impossible but odds are against him). After losing his first match back he has won his last 2. At this point he should all but be promoted to Jonidan in September, and could be back in Makushita as soon as January. Best-case for making it back to Juryo right now seems like next May.

Tokyo Joshi Pro “SUMMER SUN PRINCESS ’24” LIVE Results (7/20/24)

Tokyo Joshi Pro’s quarterly blowout event, SUMMER SUN PRINCESS ’24, kicks off a big weekend of wrestling across Japan today. Their annual summer tentpole event is a morning matinee event and is loaded up with 9 matches including 2 title matches and familiar foreign talent returning. In the main event, Princess Of Princess Champion Miu Watanabe defends the title against Rika Tatsumi. Can Watanabe keep her reign alive against her Daydream partner & friend or will Tatsumi become a 2-time champion? In the second title match, Yuki Arai looks to become a 2-time Princess Tag Team Champion by adding the title to her International Princess Championship, this time teaming with Moka Miyamoto to challenge Suzume & Arisu Endo for the titles. Elsewhere, Japanese veteran & AEW part-timer Emi Sakura makes a special appearance and Hall of Famer Aja Kong faces Shoko Nakajima.

There have been late changes to the card because Nao Kakuta & Mahiro Kiryu are off the original lineup. Kakuta is out due to a lower back injury that has put her retirement match next week in potential jeopardy. She was to have faced Yuki Kamifuku. Kakeru Sekiguchi is the replacement. Kiryu is off due to the always-vague poor health/physical condition (probably illness). She was to have teamd with Yuna Manase & Kaya Toribami to face Yuki Aino, Raku & Pom Harajuku. Moeka Haruhi, who just returned to Ganbare Pro this past weekend after an extended absence to be a kidney donor to save her sister’s life, is the replacement for her second match back. Haruhi also has joined Ganbare after spending most of the last decade as a freelancer.

Today’s event will be held at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo and can be watched LIVE on WRESTLE UNIVERSE in Japanese & English. Former SKE48 member Marika Tani makes her regular major-event appearance as a guest on Japanese commentary. Fans will be allowed to throw streamers/paper tape today. There will be a post-event party/gathering at a nearby venue after the event which may affect running times slightly although schedules are subject to change, but this probably will be a normal major event in terms of running time and go around 2 1/2 hours. The longest it could possibly go would be a little over 3 hours.

Today’s lineup:
Wakana Uehara, Toga & Runa Okubo vs. HIMWARI, Shino Suzuki & Haru Kazashiro
Chika Nanase vs. Kira Summer
Mei Suruga vs. Uta Takami
Yuki Aino, Raku & Pom Harajuku vs. Yuna Manase, Moeka Haruhi & Kaya Toribami
Yuki Kamifuku vs. Kakeru Sekiguchi
Miyu Yamashita & Maki Itoh vs. Emi Sakura & Mizuki
Aja Kong vs. Shoko Nakajima
Princess Tag Team Champions Suzume & Arisu Endo vs. Yuki Arai & Moka Miyamoto for the titles
Princess Of Princess Champion Miu Watanabe vs. Rika Tatsumi fro the title

Refresh this page occasionally for the latest results.

6:50 PM PT UPDATE: Live updates begin now.

We are LIVE from Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan. Your hosts are Haruo Murata, Kagehiro Osano, Sayoko Mita & Marika Tani. Your English hosts are Mr. Haku & Baliyan Akki.

The paid attendance will be announced after the event. Usual reduced capacity setup and crowd still filing in but it looks mostly full already, so it should be at least in the 700-750 range. (UPDATE: The announced paid attendance was 873)

The matches should begin in 20-25 minutes.

During Sayuri Namba’s opening announcements, they announce the year-end event for 12/29 and the 2025 opener for Tokyo Dome morning on 1/4/25, both at Korakuen. She then brings out Nao Kakuta to address the crowd, appearing even though she can’t compete today due to a back injury. Up Up Girls then come out. (Looks like matches will begin around 7:15 PM PT)

The matches begin at 7:20 PM/10:20 PM ET.

Match 1: Wakana Uehara, Toga & Runa Okubo vs. HIMWARI, Shino Suzuki & Haru Kazashiro. 20 minute time limit
Result: Wakana Uehara, Toga & Runa Okubo beat HIMAWARI, Shino Suzuki & Haru Kazashiro. Toga pinned Suzuki after Rock Bottom.

Match 2: Chika Nanase vs. Kira Summer. 15 minute time limit
Result: Kira Summer beat Chika Nanase. Kira’s first career victory!

Match 3: Mei Suruga (Chocolate Pro Wrestling) vs. Uta Takami. 15 minute time limit
Result: Mei Suruga beat Uta Takami by submission. More of a comedy match.

Match 4: Yuki Aino, Raku & Pom Harajuku vs. Yuna Manase (Ganbare Pro), Moeka Haruhi (Ganbare Pro) & Kaya Toribami. 20 minute time limit
Result: Yuki Aino, Raku & Pom Harajuku beat Yuna Manase, Moeka Haruhi & Kaya Toribami. Aino pinned Toribami after Venus DDT. Comedy match of course.

Match 5: Yuki Kamifuku vs. Kakeru Sekiguchi (Independent/Freelancer). 15 minute time limit
Result: Yuki Kamifuku beat Kakeru Sekiguchi. Nao Kakuta, who was supposed to have faced Kamifuku, was at ringside for the match. Post-match, Kamifuku with microphone. She briefly put Kakuta over then Kakuta came in to apologize for not being able to compete and thanked the crowd for coming out. She hoped they would come to her retirement match Thursday.

Match 6: Miyu Yamashita & Maki Itoh vs. Emi Sakura (Chocolate Pro Wrestling/All Elite Wrestling) & Mizuki. 20 minute time limit
Result: Miyu Yamashita & Maki Itoh beat Emi Sakura & Mizuki. Yamashita pinned Mizuki after Skull Kick. And for good measure Sakura gave Mizuki a tilt-a-whrl backbreaker afterwards. Happy Happy!

Match 7: Aja Kong (OZ Academy) vs. Shoko Nakajima. 20 minute time limit
Result: Aja Kong beat Shoko Nakajima

Match 8: Princess Tag Team Champions Suzume & Arisu Endo vs. Yuki Arai & Moka Miyamoto for the titles. 30 minute time limit (This is the first time I’ve ever seen Suzume without her traditional jet-black hair! She dyed it blonde today, also has a new outfit)
Result: Princess Tag Team Champions Suzume & Arisu Endo beat Yuki Arai & Moka Miyamoto to retain the titles. Endo beat Miyamoto with a camel clutch. V2 for the champs.

Main Event: Princess Of Princess Champion Miu Watanabe vs. Rika Tatsumi fro the title. 30 minute time limit
Result: Princess Of Princess Champion Miu Watanabe beat Rika Tatsumi to retain the title. V3 for Watanabe. Next up: Probably the Tokyo Princess Cup winner at WRESTLE PRINCESS 5 unless Watanabe wins.

The next event is the Nao Kakuta Retirement Event (they call it graduation) Thursday at Shin-Kiba 1st Ring in Tokyo. Hopefully Kakuta will be able to compete in her final match. Live streaming on WRESTLE UNIVERSE will begin at 2:30 AM PT/5:30 AM ET.

Sumo-July 2024 Grand Sumo Tournament Day 5 Results (7/18/24) (Top 2 Tiers)

Here are the quick results from today’s Day 5 of the July 2024 Grand Sumo Tournament in Nagoya:
Key: M-Maegashira, K-Komusubi, S-Sekiwake, O-Ozeki, Y-Yokozuna, J-Juryo, Ms-Makushita

Makuuchi (top tier):
Bushozan (M16) beat Daiamami (J2)
Nishikifuji (M17) beat Endo (M14)
Roga (M15) beat Takarafuji (M13)
Hokutofuji (M13) beat Kagayaki (M16)
WWakatakakage (M14) beat Chouranoumi (M13)
Midorifuji (M10) beat Asanoyama (M12) by default/withdrawal
Shodai (M10) beat Nishikigi (M11)
Tamawashi (M9) beat Ichiyamamoto (M11)
Oshoma (M9) beat Kotoshoho (M7)
Oho (M6) beat Kinbozan (M7)
Takanosho (M6) beat Ryuden (M8)
Shonannoumi (M5) beat Sadanoumi (M7)
Tobizaru (M4) beat Meisei (M1)
Daieisho (K) beat Hiradoumi (K)
Abi (S) beat Atamifuji (M1)
Onosato (S) beat Kirishima (S)
Mitakeumi (M2) beat Kotozakura (O)
Takakeisho (O) beat Ura (M4)
Hoshoryu (O) beat Wakamotoharu (M2)
Terunofuji (Y) beat Gonoyama (M3)
Leader: Terunofuji (5-0)
WITHDRAWAL: Asanoyama (M12). Torn ACL (left knee). Tournament over. Out at least 6 months. Will finish the equivalent of 3-12 (was 3-1 coming into today) and probably will be demoted to Juryo in September and Makushita by the end of the year.
RE-ENTRY: Chiyoshoma (M15). Will return tomorrow. Missed first 5 days due to a herniated disc (back). Will be the equivalent of 0-5, so he still has a chance to clinch a promotion or at least enough wins to avoid demotion back to Juryo.
Of note: There must have been some bad blood between Oho & Kinbozan because both of them pulled Hoshoryus post-match and gave each other angry stinky face glares instead of bowing. It certainly was an intense bout with a lot of hard pushing & slapping. Elsewhere, we’re clearly seeing “old” Terunofuji as he has mostly been dominant in cruising to a 5-0 start. If he stays healthy he seems to be on track for that elusive 10th championship he desires before retiring.
Ozeki Watch: At 3-2, Kirishima needs to go 7-3 or better the rest of the way to be promoted back to Ozeki in September. If he doesn’t get 10+ wins, he starts all over. Takakeisho is 2-3 and must go 6-4 or better to stay at Ozeki.

Fujiseiun (J14) beat Tsushimanada (J12)
Kayo (J13) beat Tochitaikai (J11)

Shimanoumi (J6) beat Daishoho (J4)
Mitoryu (J3) beat Onokatsu (J1)
Tokihayate (J1) beat Kitanowaka (J3)
Leader: 7 at 4-1. Both remaining unbeatens after Day 4 lost today.

Injury Report: Early Summer Sunsets

More injury news from Tokyo Joshi Pro ahead of SUMMER SUN PRINCESS ’24 this Saturday, and it’s unfortunate because of the two absences now, Nao Kakuta remains one of them. Existing lower back injury. She was to have faced Yuki Kamifuku. Kakeru Sekiguchi is the replacement. Kakuta will participate in a post-event autograph session, but now there should be worry about her status for her final match scheduled for next week and if this injury could be career-ending without one last match. Additionally, Mahiro Kiryu is now off too. The always-vague poor health/physical condition. She was to have teamed with Yuna Manase & Kaya Toribami to face Yuki Aino, Raku & Pom Harajuku. Moeka Haruhi, who just returned from a long absence to be a kidney donor to her sister, is the replacement. Haruhi will be at the post-event party but no Kiryu, so refunds will be offered to affected fans.
