Sumo-July 2022 Grand Sumo Tournament Day 11 Results (Top 2 Tiers)

Here are the quick results from Day 11 of the July 2022 Grand Sumo Tournament from Nagoya:
Key: M-Maegashira; K-Komosubi; S-Sekiwake; O-Ozeki; Y-Yokozuna; J-Juryo (2nd tier)
Makuuchi (Top tier)
Onosho (M15) beat Daiamami (M16)
Chiyoshoma (M13) beat Takarafuji (M12)
Terutsuyoshi (M12) beat Chiyomaru (M17)
Midorifuji (M11) beat Tsurugisho (M14)
Yutakayama (M16) beat Kotoshoho (M11) by default/withdrawal
Nishikifuji (M17) beat Chiyotairyu (M10)
Oho (M15) beat Kotoeko (M0) by default/withdrawal
Myogiryu (M14) beat Nishigiki (M8)
Tochinoshin (M8) beat Meisei (M10)
Sadanoumi (M5) beat Shimanoumi (M9)
Hokutofuji (M7) beat Wakamotoharu (M4)
Ura (M3) beat Okinoumi (M7)
Tamawashi (M3) beat Kiribayama (M1)
Ichinojo (M2) beat Abi (K)
Daieisho (S) beat Kotonowaka (M2) by default/withdrawal
Aoiyama (M6) beat Wakatakakage (S)
Shodai (O) beat Enho (M5)
Takakeisho (O) beat Tobizaru (M6)
Terunofuji (Y) beat Hoshoryu (K)
WITHDRAWALS: Kotoshoho (M11), Kotoeko (M9), Kotonowaka (M2). Coronavirus in Sadogatake Beya so they are all out.
Notes: Shodai has won 6 straight and now needs just one win in his last 4 matches to get out of Kadoban status again and remain a full fledged Ozeki. No such worries for Takakeisho, who now has his winning record. Mitakeumi, who faces demotion and will finish with a losing record due to a coronavirus-related withdrawwal, won’t know his fate until after the tournament. If demoted, his initial stay at Ozeki lasted just 3 tournaments. As for potential Ozeki, Wakatakakage is up against the wall with regards to promotion chances. He likely needs to win out to have any real chance, that would put him at 10-5 with 31 wins and 1 championship in his last 3 tournaments (the minimum wins needed in a 3-tournament stretch for Ozeki consideration at Sekiwake is 30). Could happen with 9 wins but I doubt it.
Leader: Terunofuji, Ichinojo (9-2)

Juryo:
Kitanowaka (J12) beat Takakento (Makushita 1)
Kaisho (J9) beat Yago (J12)
Kotokuzan (J7) beat Churanoumi (J9)
Kaisei (J11) beat Tokushoryu (J5)
Gonoyama (J14) beat Chiyonokuni (J5)
Mitoryu (J4) beat Chiyosakae (J14)
Hokuseiho (J13) beat Asanowaka (J4)
Daishoho (J3) beat Tochimaru (J11)
Hiradoumi (J8) beat Kagayaki (J3)
Enho (J8) beat Tohakuryu (J2) by default/withdrawal
Akua (J7) beat Azumaryu (J2) by default/withdrawal
Atamifuji (J6) beat Hidenoumi (J1)
Ryuden (J1) beat Bushozan (J6)
WITHDRAWALS: Tohakuryu (J2), Azumaryu (J2). Coronavirus in Tamanoi Beya so they are all out. Kaisho (J9) is also out starting on Day 12. That means Gonoyama gets the free win and will stay in Juryo because that’s going to be his 8th win and a promotion. If Kaisho is out because Asakayama Beya has coronavirus, Kaisho is their only wrestler above the Sandanme.
Leader: Ryuden (9-2)

Asanoyama Watch: By beating Sandanme 39 Suguro, the former Ozeki now at Sandanme 22 is 6-0 with one match left. There are 3 in the Sandanme at 6-0 so he will face one of the other two leaders in his final match. A win means either the championship or a playoff. Regardless, he is promoting to Makushita next time.
Lower tier notes: In the Makushita, Juryo-bound Kinbozan will face Yoshii for the championship, likely on Day 13. Both are 6-0. Kinbozan is a Makushita 1 and will almost definitely be the first rikishi from Kazakhstan to reach the top two tiers, while Yoshii is a Makushita 38, probably too low to reach Juryo with a championship. In the Jonidan, Hitoshi & Rinko, both 6-0, will meet for the title and likely promotion to the Sandanme. In the bottom Jonokuchi, Takahashi only needs to win his final match to begin his career with a championship.

AEW Dynamite 7/20/22 Results (SPOILERS!)

Here are the quick results from tonight’s AEW Dynamite from Duluth, GA (SPOILERS for west coast viewers!):

Brody King beat Darby Allin.

Wheeler Yuta & Jon Moxley beat Best Friends. Yuta pinned Chuck Taylor.

Christian Cage & Luchasaurus beat Varsity Blonds. Christian pinned Brian Pillman Jr. Squash. After the match, Jungle Boy returned and Luchasaurus possibly turned on Christian to re-form Jurassic Express with Jungle Boy.

FTW Champion Ricky Starks beat Cole Karter to retain the title. (The FTW Title is not recognized by AEW. Or anyone for that matter, unless their name is Taz)

Jade Cargill & Kiera Hogan beat Willow Nightingale & Athena. Carigll pinned NIghtingale after Jaded. This was to have been Cargill, Hogan & Leila Grey vs. Nightingale, Athena & Kris Statlander but Grey was removed earlier today due to not being medically cleared to compete. Per a pre-match stip he came up with, Stokely Hathaway got to keep one of the 3 opponents out of the match and chose Statlander, who was also banned from ringside.

Chris Jericho beat Eddie Kingston in a Barbed Wire (Almost) Everywhere Death match. Jericho Appreciation Society was suspended in a shark cage above the crowd. At least until Anna Jay turned heel after Tay Conti interfered to fight Ruby Soho, who had the controls to the cage. Long story short, screwjob.

Definitely a big drop off from last week’s show and the main event was a huge letdown. Questionable creative all over the place.

Friday on Rampage: The Butcher & The Blade vs. Adam Page & John Silver, Lee Moriarty vs. Dante Martin, Britt Baker & Jamie Hayter vs. TBA, Max Caster vs. Austin Gunn in a rap battle (Moving On…) and Christopher Daniels vs. Jay Lethal.

Next week: Fight For The Fallen, AEW’s annual charity fundraiser special. AEW Women’s World Champion Thunder Rosa vs. Miyu Yamashita (Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling) for the title, Starks vs. Danhausen for the FTW Title and more TBA, which for the most part will be announced Saturday during the Ring Of Honor PPV.

WITHDRAWALS: Azumaryu (J2), Tohakuryu (J2). Coronavirus-related, their beya is out.
Leader: Ryuden (8-2). Ryuden will be PROMOTED back to the top tier in September.
Lower tier notes: Among others, all of Musashigawa Beya is now out of the tournament due to coronavirus issues. Apparently if a heya (stablemaster) tests positive for the virus, his ENTIRE stable must withdraw.
Asanoyama Watch: No match today as expected. On Day 11 (now underway) he will face Suguro, a Sandanme 39 rank rikishi who is also 5-0. (Late update: Asanoyama won to go to 6-0. There currently are 3 in the Sandanme at 6-0 so Asanoyama will either go for the championship or a playoff in his final match)

Sumo-Top Tier Leader Out

BREAKING: Today’s Day 9 of the July 2022 Grand Sumo Tournament has seen a huge shakeup before the top tier begins-Ichiyamamoto, a co-leader at 6-2, has WITHDRAWN. Unknown why but my first thought is coronavirus, maybe an outbreak at his beya (stable). His stablemate Shimazuumi is out of Juryo too. This means fellow co-leader Nishikifuji will get a free win and remain at least a co-leader, putting the Maegashira 17 one win from promotion. Japan is seeing another surge in virus cases and it may be accounting for numerous withdrawals at all ranks-it seems that everyone in both Dewanoumi and Naruto Beya is now out of the tournament.
More as it becomes available.

In other news, former Ozeki Asanoyama won his Day 9 match in the Sandanme, remaining a co-leader at 5-0. At Sandanme 22, promotion to Makushita is just about guaranteed in September no matter what.

After this event Yamashita is headed overseas and will miss next weekend.

Today’s event will be held at Ryogoku KFC Hall in Tokyo and can be watched LIVE and on demand on WRESTLE UNIVERSE. There will be no commentary. Like the first two events, I anticipate today’s event having a total run time of just under 2 hours.

Today’s lineup:
Tokyo Princess Cup:
Miyu Yamashita vs. Raku
Yuki Arai vs. Hikari Noa
At least 3-4 more non-tournament matches TBA when the event begins

Refresh this page occasionally for the latest updates.

Updates below will begin at 11 PM ET/8 PM PT. The live stream is up and running in pre-show mode as of 10:30 PM ET/7:30 PM PT.

11 PM ET-We are LIVE from Ryogoku KFC Hall in Tokyo, Japan. There is no commentary.
The paid attendance will be announced after the event. Appears and sounds comparable to the last 2 days so it likely will be around 250.
The first match will begin in 10-15 minutes.

There will be 5 total matches today, 3 non-tournament matches before the tournament matches. Arai-Noa will be the main event.

Match 1: Maki Itoh, Yuki Kamifuku & Mahiro Kiryu vs. Rika Tatsumi, Miu Watanabe & Neko Haruna. 20 minute time limit

Match 2: Arisu Endo vs. Nao Kakuta & Shoko Nakjima in a 3-way. 20 minute time limit
Result: Nao Kakuta beat Shoko Nakajima & Arisu Endo in a 3-way by pinning Endo.

Match 3: Hyper Misao, Pom Harajuku, Kaya Toribami & Yuki Aino vs. Yuka Sakazaki, Suzume, Moka Miyamoto & Mizuki. 20 minute time limit
Result: Yuka Sakazaki, Suzume, Moka Miyamoto & Mizuki beat Hyper Misao, Pom Harajuku, Kaya Toribami & Yuki Aino. Suzume pinned Toribami after Ring A Bell.

Match 4: Tokyo Princess Cup Round 2-Raku vs. Miyu Yamashita. No time limit
Result: Miyu Yamashita beat Raku. As a result, Yamashita advances to the Quarterfinals and will face Nao Kakuta on 7/31.

Main Event: Tokyo Princess Cup Round 2-Yuki Arai vs. Hikari Noa. No time limit
Result: Hikari Noa beat Yuki Arai. As a result, Noa advances to the Quarterfinals and will face Yuka Sakazaki. And leaves me heartbroken over Arai losing another tough one.

This was a shorter event than I expected, the matches only went a collective 80 minutes and the event just 90 minutes.

The next event is Saturday at Shinjuku Face with the remaining Round 2 matches-Nakajima vs. Mizuki and Suzume vs. Harajuku. Live streaming on WRESTLE UNIVERSE will begin at 2 AM PT/5 AM ET.

UPDATE: The announced paid attendance was 251.

Ganbare Pro 7/17/22 Results

Ganbare Pro ran a small house show in Tokyo today, resuming their series of occasional events that was put on hold due to the pandemic.

Today’s event was held at Basement MON*STAR in Tokyo and should be available on demand on WRESTLE UNIVERSE at a later date. There was no live broadcast.

The announced paid attendance was 78, a super full house/very near sellout.

Match 1: Makoto & HARUKAZE beat Moeka Haruhi & YuuRI. Makoto pinned YuuRI after Swelling Swell.

Match 2: Keisuke Ishii & Shota vs. Shuichiro Katsumura & Shinichiro Tominaga went to d double KO. ALL 4 KO’d SIMULTANEOUSLY.

Main Event: In an elimination match with over the top rope rules, where the team left with one person by way of eliminations loses, Ken Ohka, Koki Iwasaki, Mizuki Watase & Sayaka Obihiro beat Yumehito Imanari, Takao Soma, Tyson Maeguchi & Sasuke (?). Order of elimination: Soma by Obihiro, Sasuke (?) by Obihiro, Obihiro by Imanari, Iwasaki by Maeguchi, Maeguchi by Watase. Because Imanari was the only person left for his team, the match ended there and Ohka’s team won. The match went a total of just short of 50 minutes.

After the event, Makoto vs. HARUKAZE was announced for 8/13 at Korakuen Hall as was what likely will be Spirit of Ganbare World Openweight Champion Yumehito Imanari vs. Shigehiro Irie for the title. Also, Shota will be leaving next month for an indefinite excursion to the US. No further details were announced.

The next event is 7/30 at 176BOX in Osaka. There will be no live broadcast.
